These ruins are definitely worth a visit but it only opens after April so I only saw it from the outside. You can see a lot of the old wall ruins but it would have been more interesting to see inside as well.

Walked over there during opening hours to find no one there and no access. Bummer, as this was one of the things I would have really liked to see. When you have limited time in a small town like this, its frustrating to waste time and effort getting over there for nothing.

The ruin of the former Saint Bavo Abbey is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in the early medieval Ghent. You find this museum in a small park between the river Lyss and the R40 (Kasteellaan), close to the railway station 'Dampoort'. Unfortunately this museum is open to the public on sundays in the afternoon only.

Very interesting place, specially if you are interested in architecture. It is amazing to see the layout of the old cathedral in green, recreated of bushes and trees.

We tried to find this place which was incorrectly located on the tourism map provided by the city. Eventually we found it, and ventured in. There was no ticket booth, no gate, no signs, no nothing. Upon entering, we were so excited, as the whole thing seemed magical -- ruins overgrown by nature. It was beautiful. However it wasn't long... More

The St Bavo's Abbey is close to where we are staying and is only open to the public on Sunday afternoons - 2-6pm with no charge for entry. The visits are handled by local volunteers who have produced an excellent written history which is available in English. We chatted to the 3 volunteers who were on duty and gained further... More

A group of neighbours opens and runs events in the oldest or second oldest abbey of Ghent, as well as opening the abbey every Sunday in summer. For a calender of events see: http://www.burenvandeabdij.be/kalender/ (only in Dutch). Most of the abbey is in ruins, but not all. There are quite a few statues displayed on the grounds. For nature lovers,... More

Some reviews here concern the St Bavo's Cathedral but these are 2 completely different sites. The cathedral is in the city centre and contains the Lamb of God painting (some panels are under restauration in the museum for fine arts, you can see the experts restauring there). The St Bavo's Abbey (see picture) is a medieval abbey in beautiful surroundings... More

This is an impressive building and there's a very good copy of the mystic lamb so you don't have to pay the 4 euro to see the original one (sorry, I know some people may find this unacceptable but it's just my opinion).

I loved the ruins and the vegetation growing on the walls. Not so many tourists, it was only local people walking around and relaxing on benches to admire the leftover architecture. It's ideal for a day out for couple, stroll around and have picnic food in front of the abbeys' walls and the area shaded by the trees. By the... More
