This sculpture is a fitting monument to a great man, a famous Renaissance humanist, theologian and philosopher. He was a local having been born and lived in Rotterdam.

Erasmus and Rotterdam, it couldn't be separated from each other. This statue is the oldest bronze statue in the Netherlands. You can't miss it when you're walk in this area, near "Sint-Laurenskerk"

The sculpture is ( as far as we know) the oldest bronze sculpture in the Netherlands.
It was made in 1622, has been moved since than several times, and is now back
very near (appr. 100 mtr) to the place where he was born in 1466.
Desiderius Erasmus was an important humanist, philosopher and even more a writer
who lived from from 1466 till 1536. (it is situated very close to the 'Markthal')

Erasmus is probably one of the most important people ever to have lived in Rotterdam. So it's no wonder there is this statue in the heart of Rotterdam to commemorate this man. Great picture moment for the tourists!

Again this is nice statue to pass by and see. There is nothing much special about the statue itself but its history, dated to WW2, is nice.

Located in front of the Sint Laurenskerk and a small park, this statue was easy to find during my walk from the Rotterdam Centraal Station to near by attractions. Took several pictures before leaving.

There is not much to say. Located right in front of the Laurenskerk, it represents the most acclaimed historical figure of Rotterdam - Desiderius Erasmus. The surroundings are really nice and, of course, it is well worth it to see the old church next to it.

Erasmus, one of the most famous Rotterdammer ever :) The sculpture in itself is nice and simple but the surroundings do not participate to its enhancement, that's a shame... Altough, if you go to Little V, a yummy vietnamese restaurant on the plaza, make sure to take a look at Erasmus, and get a souvenir photography!

This is a very good statue that towers above you, it was originally unveiled in 1622. Erasmus was a son of Rotterdam. However, the sculpture is made more interesting by the number of times it has been moved and the fact that it survived the bombing in 1940 which decimated so much of the City. There is a plaque at the base of the statue that lists its moves. If you are at the Markthal close by it is well worth the short walk to the excellent Sint-Laurenskerk Church nearby and the sculpture is situated just in front of the church

The famous 16th century philosopher Erasmus and Rotterdam have a special bond. Indeed, his full name was "Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam". Think of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam with the world famous medical faculty; the striking Erasmus Bridge (the Swan) and for a while a metro line was called the "Erasmus line". It is appropriate that this bond is honored by this statue in front of the only medieval building left in Rotterdam, the St. Laurens Church.
