The St Lawrence's Church is the only remaining medieval building in Rotterdam's city centre which has suffered severe damage during the World War II aerial bombardment. Although the church was also heavily damaged during the blitz, leaving only the tower and walls, it was subsequently restored and is now the symbol of Rotterdam's reconstruction as well as resilience. Built between 1449 and 1525, this all-stone basilica became a Protestant Church during the Reformation Movement that swept across Europe in the 16th century. Not exactly a must-see in Rotterdam, especially if you're averse to paying entrance fees to enter a church. Stop here for a quick admiration of the only medieval remnant in a city with funkily modern architecture before making your way to the Markthal.

Charging for entrance to a church is, frankly, appalling and unchristian. Whenever I visit great churches and cathedrals, as a tourist or a visiting worshiper, I donate for the maintenance of these important and beautiful buildings. It is completely reasonable to charge tourists for access and tours to areas not intended by the builders for public access (such as bell towers), but to put up any price barrier whatsoever to entry to what is and out to be a place of divine inspiration — and spiritual refuge — goes against the very core of Christian belief.

The Laurens church was damaged but not destroyed during the WW2 bombardment of Rotterdam. It stands tall as a survivor in the midst of postwar buildings. You can take an inside look for a charge of 3 euros. Toilet visit is 50 eurocents. Very much worthwhile!

The big church in the centre of Rotterdam is the only medieval structure that survived the bombardment of 1940. It was quite nicely restored after the war. When open, it can be visited for a 3 euro access fee. A protestant church since 1572, it is fairly austere but still quite beautiful to see on the inside.

It is a medieval Protestant church. It was seriously damaged during the war, even thought to be demolished, but was restored. It is located in a central area. Its construction began in 1449 and is currently one of the most important in the city. Unfortunately we could not enter because a marriage was taking place. We saw only its outside.

The church of San Lorenzo is the only building of medieval origins in Rotterdam.
This too risked disappearing, following the heavy bombings of the Second World War it was practically destroyed, only the bell tower was saved.
However, on the initiative of the royal house, the church was rebuilt from memory.

My experience of this church was unusual, as I attended an evening event there. But it is well worth a visit anytime. There is a fine organ, gorgeous stained glass and architecture. There's a pay toilet. Make sure and see the Erasmus sculptures outside in the courtyard.

The sole survivor of the medieval Rotterdam, this church was badly damaged during WWII. Saved from demolition and heavily restored, it serves as a key symbol of the city’s indefatigable nature.

The interior is noted for its austerity. The lack of decoration or embellishments is striking. The window glass is clear and plain. The only memorials of significance are three sculptured reliefs of C17th military heroes. The most notable is of Witte de With, a famous admiral who was finally done for after a mixed career by those naughty Swedes (again).

The Laurentius church is one of the few buildings that was restored after the bombardment of the centre of Rotterdam in 1940. It now stands somewhat solemnly between the glitzy new architecture such as the nearby Market Hall. It was originally built between 1449 and 1500 and the tower was completed in 1655. It is still in use for religious services and also for cultural events.

The Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk is a tough survivor! Built in the 15th century it has survived several bouts of damage and destruction, and it still stands proudly defiant! It's full of history and it is lovely inside and out. It's worth a visit, especially if you are visiting the Markthal which is practically next to it.
