The "Matkt" in Delft, the central square of the old town, is historic significant through the "Nieuwe Kerk" ( New Church) on one side and the City Hall on the other side. The "Nieuwe Kerk" is famous, because many members of the Dutch royal dynasty are buried there and the City Hall because of the significant 18th century architecture. Furthermore, the "Markt" is lined with shops and restaurants, with probably a policy calculated to extract the maximum amount of money from the tourists. Granted, all significant historic squares in historic cities are lined with such shops and restaurants, but despite the historic significance, the "Markt" misses the charm of, say, Piazza Il Campo in Siena, or Piazza Navona in Rome, to mention some arbitrary competitors. A three point rating is my maximum for the "Markt".

The large central square is the main reason to visit Delft. It is an impressive legacy of the Dutch Golden Ages. A stroll around is like a journey back to the ages of Vermeer. Unlike other bigger cities, it is not excessively touristy and allows relaxing and pleasant exploration.

The main square in Delft. It has been used a few times as a film location, so you might recognise it. Plenty of cafes, restaurants, the Nieuw Kerk and the Stadhuis. Other picturesque historical buildings. During our October stay, it never seemed to get crowded. Watch out for the cyclists and the occasional car.

Great pleasure to visit the Markt and surroundings. Lovely place with beautiful canal, shops and restaurants. I believe it was one of the largest and oldest markets in Europe. Just love the landscape view when standing in the middle of the square. At the other side of the market was the Saturday Flea market. We slowly walked through those small paves around the Markt. It was wonderful walking tour.

After spending a few days in Amsterdam it was a relief to visit the quaint town of Delft. Lots of lovely restaurants, stores, and great architecture to see and enjoy. Well worth the drive out to visit this town!

I just adore Delft. It’s one of my favorite cities to visit while in the Netherlands. It has so much charm and history. The city center is full of shops and restaurants. Also canals.walking around in the center is just breath taking, the shops are so quaint and you’ll find something for everyone in any of the shops. Go visit down and stroller found cobblestone streets and just taking all the history that they have there. You’ll be glad you did

One of the most enchanting squares in Holland. On one side the splendid Stadthuis, on the other the imposing Newkerke. Delft famous for its ceramics, presents itself with the characteristic houses with red roofs along the countless canals. Very pleasant environment, with many craft shops of ceramics and souvenirs. The main square in Delft. It has shops, cafes, bars and restaurants along its sides but also the impressive town hall and a beautiful church. The tourist information centre is just around the corner. Lots of people wandering around but a nice place to spend some time.

Already since the 12th century, every Thursday there is a big market on the Delft central market square. In the late 14th century, the New Church was built and occupies some of the space, still leaving a very generous 120x45 squared meters of area in place.

The market was last renovated in 2004, when parking was no longer allowed and the statue of Hugo Grotius was moved towards the church. Many restaurants with terraces and souvenir shops are located around the market, most are not tourist traps but with good quality and service.

The next time you add The Netherlands in your travel itinerary, come to Delft. Once popular for its elegant hand-painted blue porcelain patterned after the 17th century Chinese white & blue ceramic, Delft is also the burial ground of the members of the House of Orange, the reigning Dutch royal family. Because the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) is presently under renovation, my photos of the church shows only the tower.

The Market Square is one main reason tourists come to visit. On normal days, you can have the whole big open space to yourself, surrounded by century-old shops with beautiful gables, its focal point- the imposing Stadhuis (City Hall) in Renaissance style, and the Gothic building of the Nieuwe Kerk across. It is the second highest church tower in the country. I have climbed the steep steps up to the lower tower and it's rewarding to see a beautiful scenery of red tile roofs and canals from there. If you have more energy, carry on to the top and be brave to look down!

The souvenir shops and cafe's are a delight. The Salamander, in a setting of an old Dutch pharmacy captures my attention. Its mascot plastered at the entrance wall almost resemble Rumplestiltskin. Huge ears! Rob, the proprietor in white robe who runs this charming place has an eclectic stock of almost everything you need from the basic cough drops to slippers, in case you have the need to bare your feet in comfort!

The open market on Thursdays and Saturdays is a "treasure trove" of about anything from a variety of fresh fish from the North Sea, deep fried fish & ready-to-eat haring (herring), fresh vegetables & fruits, breads & pastries, fabrics to clothing, accessories, fresh cut flowers to anything that is delightful. Just outside the square during summer months are antique stalls. You might just find an old magazine your grandma used to read, or acquire a silver spoon you can flog in an auction.

The buzzing Market Square activities on Thursdays & Saturdays extends to a few steps leading to Brabantse Turfmarkt & Burgwal for the flowers and more fruits and vegetables, and for more cheese! If tulip bulbs are what you're looking for, or simply want flowers that have not been sitting in the open, BLOEMIG (floral) is another quaint shop at the corner of Beestenmarkt (Animal Market) and Molslaan (Mole Street). They no longer trade animals there, nor there are any moles to see. Instead, you will find friendly florists, Inge & Omy with their more exclusive collection of flowers. They also give a more personal service that you don't get from the shouting merchants at the open market. Like tv cooks, they will chat with you as they keep adding one flower after the other while concocting a beautiful bouquet to take away. If not, bring home a piece of The Netherlands and buy tulip bulbs from them. They sell a variety of colours and types that will always remind you of your Delft visit.

While the Market Square can be very busy during market days, you would also witness newly weds just in front of the old city hall (Stadhuis) on other days. You can join the crowd by taking photos of the couple or giving them an applause. And its exciting! Some ride in horse-drawn carriages as in days gone by, some in rented oldsmobiles and topdowns. I can tell you, there's never a dull moment on the Market Square, especially when you hear a horse-drawn orgel play some of the old tunes. Don't forget to drop a coin or more inside the clanking brass pot of the orgel owner so he can feed his horse. My advise to anyone visiting Delft from other cities, take the train. It's fast and you don't need to worry about parking which is very limited. The train station is new and a walking distance to the city centre. Tot ziens!
