Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I came to the East Gate after visiting various places associated with Vermeer. I was quite moved when I saw a drawbridge rising nearby for the first time.
The slanted Old Church, the Market Square and its surroundings, and the canal blend perfectly into the town, and I thought to myself, I would love to live in a town like this.
If you walk from the East Gate along the canal towards the station, you will reach the "View of Delft" location.
Also, on the way from the New Church to the East Gate, I found a ramen shop by the canal with a large sign in the window saying "Ramen, never skip."

The last of the eight medieval gates still standing and clearly worth a visit. There are many beautiful details on the gate itself to photograph.
The areas around it with the meadows and beds are used as sunbathing areas and picnic areas, but it is still very clean there. Some people swim in the canals.

I live close by this historic building. Once, the city of Delft was completely walled against outside intruders (notably the Spanish troops), and had several town gates for passage. The Oostpoort (= East gate) is the last remaining example of these gates.
The setting is beautiful, and it is a favorite spot for newly weds to make their wedding photo's. It is for pedestrians and cyclists also a commonly used route to the town center, so be careful as there is no sidewalk...
This monument has been rented out by the municipality to a lady for 50 years in a row. On rare occasions it could be visited, because she organized concerts with medieval music in the annex room above the arches. There was room for no more than 20 people.
Sadly, this lady passed away two years ago, and the place is now empy. Future plans with the Oostpoort are unknown to us. In the meantime all we can do is advise you to admire the splendor of this brick masterpiece of architecture from the outside.

If you’ve ever wanted to compare Vermeer’s View of Delft with the scene today, you’ll be largely disappointed. Much has changed since the 1660s. But, if you pass through the Oostpoort and cross the bridge, you’ll get a glimpse of the past. There’s the broad canal and, beyond it, the twin towers of a gateway with its arched entrance. Whilst Vermeer’s painting is from the south, and features a different gateway, the style of the Oostpoort is largely identical. When we visited, it was raining but, surveying the scene from beneath the dripping trees, it was worth the effort.

If you're coming from the Delft train station, Oostport is on the opposite side of it. Good thing Delft is compact, you can easily make the effort to walk there since it's very photogenic and if you pass through the gates, you can imagine merchants and travellers entering the town of Delft during medieval times.
Upon entering, just go straight, keep the towers in front of you and follow the path and you'll be in the Markt in no time.

If you are in the city centre, it's a short walk (like 5/10 minutes). This is an example of Brick Gothic northern European architecture that was built around 1400. Around 1510, the towers were enhanced with an additional octagonal floor and high spires.

My husband and I ended up staying in a B&B just down the canal a block from this gothic beauty. The very late summer twilight here (10:00ish p.m.!) has been throwing off our sleep cycles more than just jet lag, however, we found that taking a walk around this time helps. Fortunately we're in such a picturesque area! The light is perfect for photos and there's a great spot that you can get the Oostpoort with the church clock tower in the background as well. I'd love to see the gallery inside, but it's private with no contact info that I've found. Built in 1400, this gorgeous structure is another testament to Dutch ingenuity.

Delft is a beautiful town with gorgeous canals everywhere but in my opinion this is the prettiest part of it all.
The gate and the swing bridge make a beautiful photo op. Don't miss it

It's a very small place, basically an old gate to the city, but it really worth to go there and admire this gorgeous door
