About

The Church looks amazing and very spectacular at the outside. It looks so colossal that you really want to look inside what there is inside of it. There is a entrance price of €9,- p.p. I have to say if you can see a lot of things it would be worth it, but for us it was not.
Inside there are a few things to see. Like you can walk all the way into the tower to see a floor reflection what is okay to see but not very informative. Then if you walk further you can see a great view above Veere what is cool.
In the church itself there is the same as on top of the tower and some hanging ships. Oh and a dead cat.
So if a have to rate it in categories: Church, inside, and price it would be:
Church: 8,5. As it looks amazing from the outside. It’s so big and maybe a bit mysterious you really want to look inside to see what’s going on in there.
Inside 4.5. It really isn’t worth it to get in. Especially not for that price. There is not much to see and it isn’t very informative as you expect. The only thing why you maybe want to get in is because of the view on top of the church.
Price 4. Like I said when you pay €9.- you expect to see something cool or informative. You know you see the church as it is so big and it looks spectacular so you wanna see what’s inside but when you pay the entrance it is just disappointing.
Conclusion:
Watch the church from the outside as it is free. As cool and awesome as it looks at the outside so disappointed is it at the inside. Unless if you really wanna go on top or see a dead cat from the 15th century and you wanna pay €9,- for it I should say let’s go. My final rating; 5,7.

We visited the church to see the Experience, which proved to be very nice. High in the tower we enjoyed the view, as well as an audiovisual with beautiful images. In the church we had some fun with an other audiovisual for kids, and a climbing tool. It was also possible to do some abseilen, which we did not see.

This is one of 36 abandoned Gothic cathedrals in Europe. It was patterned after Our Lady of Snow cathedral in Rome.

Just by looking at the exterior of this large church at the outskirts of Veere one wouldn't think it has had such a tumultuous history. Although it started out as a Catholic Church in the 1500's, it quickly was taken over by Protestants. There were groups of Protestants who shared the church's interior - French, Scottish, and Lutherans. These groups stripped the church of anything Catholic and sold it. The French in the 1800s used the church as a hospital, stable, and even as a prison for its British captives. In the mid-1800s this structure, no longer a church, housed the poor who were allowed to use the space as a workshop. Some wanted to demolish the building and use its stone for other building projects. In the 1900s, the building was used for a variety of different purposes. For example, in 1953 it became a holding spot to place cows during the floods. Later it was also used for as an indoor soccer field. Presently, it is being renovated so it can be used for cultural activities or performances.
The Grote Kerk was the main church of this town in medieval times, but it was not built in the center of town close to the town hall in the late 1400s -early 1500s, but on its outskirts. Presently, it is close to the town's huge parking lot and the dock for river cruise ships. It is a huge structure that makes one think that the population of Veere must have been much, much larger than it is today. I didn't think the exterior of the church had any outstanding architectural features. The apse points towards the town, about a 5 minute brisk walk to the Town Hall. On the church wall, beside the tower, was a bronze plaque that provided a few facts about the church. In front of the church was a roofed cistern which I suppose once supplied the community with fresh water. The grassy areas around the church could be where the graveyard was centuries ago, but now the headstones are all gone. For tourists, this building is mainly a photo opportunity as they walk past it from the cruise dock or parking lot.

We went to Veere to see the Grote Kerk, because we saw a documentation where they showed that they installed swings inside the church and it sounded like a cool place to check out (the church is not used as a regular church anymore, it’s used for cultural events).
The church is closed right now (end of March 2019) for renovation. We peeked inside and they seem to redo the floors.
Couldn’t find any further information online, but I’d think that it will be a construction site for some time.
Veere itself is a beautiful little village and worth a visit if you are into quaint places by the sea.

Closed, hard to find information on the internet on programming, opening hours, exhibitions, visits etc.
Overall I found Veere very uninviting: town hall closed, Campveerse toren closed, church closed, lots of tourists but nothing to do but drink coffee. Just seeing the facades is not enough for me to go there.

Like so often on Tripadvisor, there are two entries (with a different rating) for this church: one under ‘Nederlands Hervormde Kerk’ (26 reviews) and one under ‘de Grote Kerk Veere uit 1521-Muziek Podium Zeeland’ (9 reviews). The surprisingly monumental church, with its sturdy, belfry-like tower, bears witness to the fact that Veere must have been much more prosperous and populated in the past than it is now. Originally there were even two contiguous churches, aptly called the small and the big church, which were joined and separated several times. Walking around the building, we could clearly see it underwent many transformations and the result isn’t particularly attractive. We found the church closed, so we couldn’t judge the inside, which is used for concerts and other events, nor climb the tower.
The elegant little building with a pointed roof next to the church was the cistern to collect the rainwater from the church’s roof. It was commissioned by Maximilian of Burgundy in 1551 following complaints by the Scottish wool merchants established in Veere about their water supply. The house of the church’s porter has also been preserved.

There is little left of the church's interior. The building served many purposes including a hospital, a stable for horses. In fact there is nothing more than the original walls. A long climb of the tower offers a fantastic panorama.
The building is used for art exhibitions and concerts.

Now a venue for concerts and art exhibitions, it was once used as a hospital by Napoleon. A wonderful historic building. Climb the stairs to the top of the spire (accessed by the door just left of the entrance) to enjoy 360o views of Veere. About 2/3rds of the way up, there is a floor that houses a scale model of Veere - a hidden gem not advertised.

This church is no longer a church. However, as we walk all around it, you see this great structure. This small town, which was founded in 1355, was also an important port for Scotland. it has its significance in history
