Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The whole family enjoyed the trip to Zeeuws Museum. It has a really wide ranging mix, interestingly curated. Loved the display and explanations on the local costume, the modern work interspersed with the historic. Interesting building conversion and lovely helpful staff.
Not too large for our impatient teenager.
Shop was a hit too..we've not found a use for our Zeeland buttons yet.
We visited in August 2019..just a little late with review and it won't let me input that date below! Also good for the showery day.

In most places we visit we usually visit a museum.
In Middelburg this was the Zeeuw Museum, located in the old restored abbey. We entered the museum through the modern glass entrance.
Due to the limitations of such an old building, the exhibition spaces were spread over four floors with relatively narrow exhibition rooms. Fortunately, we could use the elevator to visit the different floors.
In particular we visited the large retrospective exhibition of the versatile Adriaen van de Venne, who spent part of his life and work in Middelburg. We thought it was a wonderful overview of the different periods in his life with paintings, drawings, illustrations, texts, etc.
We took a quick look at the other parts of the museum.

We were here with two children aged 10 and 6. The staff is very nice and friendly. The girls had a fun treasure hunt where they had to take selfies with objects from the museum. Varied collection with paintings, tapestries and objects. The cabinet of curiosities is great fun for children. Especially the unicorn's horn, of course.
And while you're there: climb the Lange Jan, just a stone's throw away.

As far as we are concerned, a mediocre experience. We are missing some more history about Zeeland
Upon entering, it was very neatly indicated that 1 floor was closed and we were left to choose whether we still went inside.
The floor about Zeeland was open, so that was our interest.
But we found little history here

This museum was disappointing. With the name Zeeuws Museum you expect a museum about the history of Zeeland. However, there was no sign of that. But it's a bite snap museum with no common thread. There is also an audio tour missing, so you miss a lot of interesting information.

This is the most imaginatively-curated museum I have been to for many years. It is not too big to enjoy, but you can see most things in the space of an hour or two (depending on your level of interest).
From the ground up (as I remember)
1st floor - costume from the area through the years - both national and "mainstream", as well as a range of modern designs inspired by the area. I particularly loved how, instead of ordinary signage, the museum had had the details printed on to "shop" swing-tags. There was also a film entitled "striptease 1850" which showed how the many layers of dress at that time were put on and held together.
The next floors had some huge tapestries depicitng local events, some beautiful local silver and a range of paintings of the area by different artists from diffferent areas.
The final floor was "boxes of Wonder" - three huge "packing crates" on different themes - life and death, home and family, wealth and power - contaiing a mass of beautiful and interesting artifacts linked to the themes.
This area of Holland is generally popular with Dutch and German visitors - we saw only 2 other British families the whole time - so often there is little or no information available in English (even in restaurants). However, this museum had comprehensive information available (with a very high standard of translation) even for the three "crates" - each of which had maybe 50 different display cases requiring detailed explanation.
Final incentive - under 18s go free, students half price

The Zeeuws Museum is housed in one of the buildings of the Middelburg Abbey, in the old centre of Middelburg, which is also reviewed on Tripadvisor. The museum has a collection of bits and pieces from everything it seems.
There are items from the rich history of this town, some mammoth bones, some archaeological findings, some modern art, etc. The museum uses three floors of the old building for the displays. You can reach these floors by stairs or elevator.
Most impressive are probably the displays of large tapestries with scenes from sea battles the Dutch had with the Spaniards in the 16th century on the river Schelde, close to Middelburg. This was the time when Middelburg was home to one of the” Oostindische Compagnies” (East India Companies) which in 1602 would merge with the other major trading companies in Holland to form the famous Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC (United East India Company).
The VOC would dominate the international trade of the 17th century and was a major factor of the “money machine” which made the Golden Age of Holland.
The international trade is reflected in the “Chambers of Wonders” in the museum where you can see numerous items which were brought home by the sailors from their journeys around the world.
You can have some enjoyable hours strolling through the different parts of the museum.
And when done you can visit the rest of the historic centre with some beautiful old buildings like the Town Hall.
For information on the museum you can visit their website and select the English section.

Decent museum, not great. Some great pieces of art are displayed here, in between pieces of a lower quality

Thank you for your review, we are happy to hear that you enjoyed some of the objects we have on display at the moment. We believe you are correct that not all our objects are of the highest quality and we show them anyway because we think they are part of the story of Zeeland. We would like to hear your opinion on the way the objects fit into the story and what objects you would like to see more of.

Well done museum, interesting "appetizers" to learn more about Zeeland and the historical structural changes (ups and downs, changing landscapes, people, ...). This is not a big comprehensive exhibition so best to visit at the beginning of your stay in Zeeland and gain inspiration what to look out for. (E.g. stand in the hall with the huge battle tapestries and afterwards when you visit the original sites try to imagine there was once major sea warfare!)

The museum coffee was great ... but to be honest the museum itself did not warrant the cost of entry.
