The main gate of the medieval city of Amersfoort is an impressive sight. Sadly, that access to the fortification's interior is restricted.
I'm giving only three stars because the overall experience was marred by the unpleasant smell emanating from the dirty water.

The old town is hidden away in the middle of a huge modern and very busy town, parking very difficult, we gave up driving around and around and came back at 7am on a saturday to get a spot. the markets were on which looked wonderful for food and flowers Parts of the old town were really peaceful to wander around, and the old walls and gates were amazing, they did not live up to the professional ones you will see. Still worth visiting overall. Tip to the local council the town is very dirty and grungy if you want the whole package go to the town of Woerden its stunning.

One of Amersfoort's most beautiful scenes. Also the part of Amersfoort just beyond is quite scenic with the middle age houses. Unfortunately the view on the Koppelpoort is marred by the train track and pedestrian/cycling bridge just before it (it is exactly from where most pictures are taken) that takes away a bit of the real magic

This place is sublimely beautiful and tranquil with canals aplenty, a medieval street pattern and numerous old buildings. The gatehouse itself is impressive but so is what lies within. Easy train ride from Utrecht, and .4m walk from station.

Completed in 1425 almost 600 years ago, this combined land and watergate complex was part of a second wall fortification around the medieval city. The huge construction project came about as the city of Amersfoort was rapidly expanding especially because of a successful textile industry.
To close and open the gates big tredmills were used not operated by hamsters, but usually by prisoners also called 'raddraaiers' (wheel turners). As you can imagine when observing a tredmill -possible as part of a guided city tour- many accidents happened resulting in serious injuries and deaths. Not so idyllic after all.
Many Dutch people like me caught a glimpse of the gates from a trainwindow. I am glad I finally paid a visit.

The Koppelpoort in Amersfoort was probably my favorite that we saw during our trip to the Netherlands. While it may not be the largest or most imposing, it was quite lovely and spanned the canals as well as the walkways. Beautiful on both sides, it is a must see while in Amersfoort.

We took the guided tour with the "stadsgids". The guide took us on the inside of the water gate, where you can observe the mechanism used to lower the water gate (which they did every night). He explained that prisoners were used to run into two big wheels that got the mechanism going. Quite unique. The gate is called koppelpoort, because it is a coupling of both a water gate and a land gate that was used to enter the city (and pay taxes!).

With the city walking tour starting at 11:30 am, you get to go into this building and see the insides. You will learn about the history of the koppelpoort, where a famous dutch saying was born, and last but not least, "walk the walk" in the giant "hamsterwheel" which raises and lowers the city gate. Really cool hidden gem! I can definatly recommend.

Koppelpoort is one of the few European remaining middle age double entrance (water and land) and fully restored.

The Koppelpoort in Amersfoort is a beautiful old gate from the Middle Ages. It was constructed as part of a defence wall that helped repel a siege in 1427.

Hi We are planning a trip to Amsterdam in August and are considering day trips. Do you recommend Amersfoort?
Written 9 November 2017
Actually, I think Amersfoort makes a better base to stay than Amsterdam (and it's so much cheaper). If you are in Amsterdam with limited time, conversely, I am not sure I would choose Amersfoort (sorry) as a day trip -- there are other Dutch cities that are far more interesting.
