Rijksmuseum Twenthe is situated to the north of Enschede. It is around half a mile on foot from the railway station.

The current exhibition on show is called Chasing the Dot by Philip Vermeulen.

It relates very much to the sensory aspects of light and sound in art and I can’t say it really interested me.

The in house collection was reasonable with some old religious triptychs on view, plus paintings from the likes of Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein, Jan Brueghel, Pieter Brueghel, Jacob van Ruisdael, Charles Francois Daubigny, John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough.

Overall it was a disappointing experience especially at the admission cost of €15.

I visited this museum for the exhibition On the Way to Bentheim as well as an introduction to it by Yvonne Bleijerveld of the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD). In three rooms, the museum provides a beautiful overview of the 17th century production of drawings by artists from Holland in Twenthe and the surrounding area. There is work on display by Jacob van Ruisdael, Nicolaes Berchem, Anthonie Waterloo and Meindert Hobbema, among others: village views, castles, water mills, nature and rock formations around Bentheim Castle (just across the border with Germany). Many of the studies drawn here in the open air were later used for drawings and paintings developed in the studio for the open market or on commission, as can be seen here. In later times, artists also made trips through Twenthe to Bentheim to gain inspiration. I enjoyed this small exhibition and the expert presentation by Mrs Bleijerveld.
On this occasion I of course also visited other departments of the museum: the so-called treasuries with landscapes - including the recently acquired John Constable - and portraits appealed to me most. I am not very fond of the interaction between 15th/early 16th century art and contemporary art as shown under the title Ars longa, vita brevis (Art is long, life is short). I was charmed by the old history pieces in the last rooms of that exhibition.
I heard from director Caroline Breunesse that in 2024, modern and contemporary art will be the focus of the museum.

The museum is housed in beautiful buildings with beautiful spaces for exhibitions and meetings. It's a shame that for years no attention has been paid to details, such as at the opening of the exhibition of 'who is the countryside'. There is a waste bin in the garden near the restaurant with a large blue garbage bag very visible. In the restaurant, someone with an eye for detail can sometimes clean up and rearrange things. And the gadgets they sell in the shop are from 25 years ago. Take your loss and sell it and clean it up and sell some nice, contemporary jewelry, etc.

This was my first visit to this museum. For starters, the museum is in a beautiful building. The permanent collection is interesting, make use of the audio tour. Two exhibitions are really worthwhile: Chasing the dot and the drawings of Kees Stoop. There are also two beautiful gardens to admire. I enjoyed myself there for over three hours.

Good mix of art from the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Interesting and well thought out juxtapositions. The selection appears haphazard on occasion with a Tracey Emin stuck in a forgotten corner, which would have been a good fit for a differently themed room. It's easy to spend two hours here even with the cafe closed.

Nice museum and great range of art. From the central part you can make a roundabout, both left and right. Along the way you pass a restaurant where you can sit both inside and outside. Great prices.
We enjoyed, access with the Museum Annual Pass.

Wasn't there for decades, don't live in the area.
Now on holiday, what a fantastic experience for almost all senses.
18th century effortlessly intertwined with modernity.
Especially the charcoal exhibition, fantastic!!!
But decor, just overwhelmed, not enough time but we'll be back soon.

We visited this Museum on a wet Easter Monday, in the City of Enschede, which on a public holiday is largely asleep. Those who were'nt asleep seemed to have joined us at the Museum, as it was well attended!!...only joking...there are heaps of restaurants and cafes open.

The Museum building is a great old lady from an elegant past...a delightful entry to an equally delightful display of some great art

Holbein and Brueghel Landscapes, self-portraits, with a particularly good one of and by Rubens and of course, a great selection of generous Rubenesque nudes by the Master himself and his students and proteges. Such a pleasure to be so close to his genius

There's also a great selection and mixture of 'modern/traditional' masters featured in a show called 'Paths to Paradise'. This takes a bit of work trying to understand what's going on, but the art-works involved are superb

The Museum provides audio assistance which adds greatly to the enjoyment

We came here while visiting the places to visit in the region. There were nice exhibitions inside. We didn't stay inside for long, but I think it's a place that should be like this. There were many tourists visiting like us.
