Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Quaint little village with great eats peppered with the typical tourist griffters. Nice local folks, friendly wait staff. All the tourist / souvenir shops ....seen one...seen em all. Go for the views and the eats. Mind the privacy of the locals. Very beautiful place

This beautiful marina and surrounding streets offer the best of Volendam. There are numerous shops and restaurants for taking a break or looking for that special souvenir. Most of the restaurants and bars offer some limited outdoor seating. There are harbor cruises if you wish to get out on the water. As a bonus, we found several public seating areas for just sitting and soaking in the ambiance of this fun little place. If in Volendam, budget some time to visit here and you will not be disappointed.

Don't let photos of crowds put you off (as nearly happened to me) about Volendam. While the shops along the waterfront (not very long, only a few blocks) obviously cater to tourists there are nice restaurants and gorgeous vistas along the shore and into the town itself.

These old houses, which used to be part of a fishing town, are now used as tourist shops. There are lots of restaurants, shops, and at least 7 stores where you can have your picture taken in Dutch costumes.

Volendam is fun to visit in a cheesy touristy way. We visited Volendam and Marken at the end of a 2-week Netherlands vacation. This area was our 'exit through the gift shop.'

The wooden shoe factory is mostly a wooden shoe store that also has a video about how wooden shoes are made.

The cheese museum is a large cheese store with lots of cheese samples. There is a demonstration area. You should try to catch a demonstration. Otherwise, it's just a store. The cheese is, of course, much more expensive than it should be because they are catering to tourists.

The view from the shore is very pretty. When you become overwhelmed with the crowds of people buying key-chains and licking ice-cream, take a moment to enjoy the view of sailboats on the horizon.

The Haven is the main tourist strip in Volendam. You’ll find museums, cheese factories, souvenir shops and photo studios plus restaurants and bars galore!
The rest of town is quieter and there is noticeably fewer tourists the further you walk past either end of the protected central marina area.

If we returned, we would love to spend some time in Volendam and enjoy it outside of the peak visiting hours when tourists descend by the hundreds!

There was sometimes no room to move as visitors occupied the road shoulder to shoulder from one side of the road to the other!

The Haven is a nice stretch to walk along, to get your souvenirs and sample local dishes at one of the numerous seafood stands. It’s a very lively area indeed!

Just beware of motorists. Tourists forget that people actually live here and that locals, shopkeepers and delivery drivers depend on the Haven and main roads to get on with their business.

We witnessed tourists almost get run over by two drivers and a guy missed his foot getting squashed by a sports car by millimeters!

Honestly it appears that the locals are fed up with their roads being besieged by tourists and thus they don’t give a hoot about visitors. They clearly have no apprehension about hitting anyone if you’re walking in the middle of the road (and they would probably be in the right), so keep your eyes open, especially when ambling along the Haven!

The harbor here is very beautiful. It's a small harbor with a row of tourist places facing it, but you still get the idea what it was like when it was a fishing village. It was raining hard when I was there but it still looked great.

We went to Volendam as a quick trip from Amsterdam for my father’s birthday. The village is a complete tourist trap - souvenir shops with kitsch plastic made in China, expensive stroopwaffels and cheese shops. There is nothing authentic about this place. Hoards of tourists coming off bus sightseeing tours and smelly fast-food joints. We naively parked our car in the big, main parking lot - there were no parking machines and no parking signs or instructions that would indicate that this is not a free parking space. We returned an hour later to find a nice surprise - a parking ticket for 100EUR. I’ve never seen a parking fine that high before in my life travelling all around Europe, USA and Australia. I guess that’s one way for Volendam municipality to milk tourists if they cannot offer any other way of making money off tourists. How about providing decent shopping, restaurant and entertainment experience? Appaling, it’s like being mugged in broad daylight. We ended my father’s special day abruptly there and then. Thank you again, Volendam for this lovely experience!

Traditional and atmospheric with Dutch barges amobst modern boats in the harbour. Traditional houses and many walks around the area, up to Edam and short bus ride to Amsterdam.

Not far outside of Amsterdam you can find this serene little town that used to be a fishing village. Nowadays, it’s mostly a tourist attraction with cheese factories, wooden shoe shops and restaurants by the lake. If you have enough time for your stay in Amsterdam, it may be worth checking out for a half day excursion.

It's hard not to commercialise a fishing village to attract tourists for income. Many may think such a trip is not worth the time but it's the whole point to see what are special for Netherlands in one place accessible within an hour or two. For visitors who have only a short time in Amsterdam, this may be one of the recommended spots not far from city. The setup was quite successful, with local ferry tour, food and fun all packed in small fishing village.
