Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

In springtime (April and early May) huge and colorful fields of commercially grown bulb flowers in the Bollenstreek - say between Katwijk and Hillegom. You can organize your own tour by car or bicycle. But don’t walk into the flowers to take a selfie! The flower farmers hate it when herds of tourist start doing this.

As we had our car, we thought we would spent a morning driving through this area which was just beautiful - we had to keep stopping to have a look. The hyacinth fields were almost over but the tulips were stunning. Easy to stand at the edge of the fields to take some photos but don't be the person who wanders into the flowers.

Spectacular experience! Checked this off my bucket list! We visited on April 8th and the tulips were in full bloom in most fields. Did a self guided bike tour , rented bikes for outside the Keukenhof gardens rental Stand. Was fairly easy to follow the map. Definitely need to be a good biker to be able to do this.

At the beginning of our car trip through the Bulb Region it was a bit of a disappointment at first. We all saw fields where the tulips had already been headed.
But the longer we drove through this region, the more fields we found where the tulips were still blooming beautifully. We have already enjoyed all that beautiful flowers! With a little searching you will find very nice fields. Definitely do it!

Late April is the best time to visit the Flower Bulb Region -in Dutch the Bollenstreek- and see the many Tulips, Daffodils and Hyacinths at their best. However please be mindful not to trample any flowers in the fields - they belong to small businesses who depend on their livelihood from growing the bulbs.
Visiting the Keukenhof flower garden is the best way to see a large variety in a stunning setting. Locals prefer to go late in the day (say earliest 3pm) to avoid the biggest crowds.

You’ve got 2 options when you’ve made it this far- visit the Keukenhof gardens or take a bike, boat or walk to the fields. Personally I enjoyed the fields more and could have skipped Keukenhof which was seriously crowded when I got there.
There are some ground rules- be respectful, many of these are private farmer property- they sometimes have signs- so pay attention, stay on path and don’t pick or step on tulips.
If you can do above- you’ll be great.

After two years of absence due to covid, the annual flower parade has returned in 2022. Named the Bloemencorso in Dutch, it is a spectacle of adorned large cars, competing for the award of most beautiful car. Very worthwhile to see in April!

First of all, i want to recommend a web site where you can check the actual information on which fields are in blossom this week ( or any day), it also gives you exact address where to find this field (following your navigation) - bloemenradar.nl (check the fields in blossom online). It makes the search of the fields easier.
Fields themselves are absolutely gorgeous and amazing. Beautiful colorful carpets of flowers. You will make hundreds of pictures, but be respectful to the farmers and flowers. Ask first for permission to go inside in the field to make a picture.
Also check Noordwijkerhout- nearby region with fluffy flower fields.

For about 2 months in the spring, this is one of the most beautiful regions in the world. Can't overemphasize the astonishing beauty found here. We toured the area with a private guide, whih is one of many ways to visit the area. We saw many others driving themselves in a car, or biking, or hiking. Any one of these ways is wonderful.
Please remember that the flowers bloom only for a certain period in the spring. We deliberately planned a visit from the US during this period and were very, very glad we did.

Originally centered on the town of Haarlem west of Amsterdam, bulb cultivation spread south initially to Hillegom and Lisse and the now-famous Keukenhof. Later bulb farming took hold further north in the Alkmaar region. All are a short distance inland from the North Sea, sheltered by sand dunes and in relatively sandys soils that are favored by these bulbs.
The center of the bulb belt / flower belt / bulb region remains Keukenhof Gardens (see my review); however the fields of flowers nearby are not part of the gardens. The classic drive or cycling route is between Haarlem and Leiden. We viewed the plantings outside Keukenhof but did not venture out onto those fields. We did visit the northern part of the bulb belt beyond Alkmaar near Sint Maartensbrug with a tour guide.
Our guide spoke with a farmer for details about the bulb business. Some serve the fresh-cut flower market and others harvest the bulbs; both are critical components of Dutch agricultural export industry. Flowers are cut in both cases, and are harvested prior to full bloom for the fresh-cut market and just after full bloom when bulbs are the crop. This allows the full potential of the bulbs to be achieved. Farmers rotate their plantings every year between the different flowers (i.e. tulip, hyacinth, daffodil, crocus, gladiolus, narcissus, iris etc) so as not to deplete the soil of vital nutrients. Apparently every few years the fields are allowed to be flooded and thus replenish the soil. Liquified animal dung manure is also used to fertilize the fields thus converting stinking stool into fragrant flowers.

It's better you try to get information from a travel agency in the UK self. You can visit the tulip fields only in the spring ( end march to end may). In this periode of time most of the flowers are open ( depend on the weather)

Bonjour, Ana.

Helo.just saw few pictures published 6th june.were they done on that day? As looks there is still flowers...planing to go there but is there some left? 🙄
Written 17 June 2019
There are almost always some flowers blooming somewhere - in private gardens for example. However, if you want to see the massive fields of flowers you must go during the real growing season ( spring - summer).
Written 15 October 2019
We are planning a visit between 24-28May
Would we be able to see any tulip flowers or bulbs then?
Kukenhoff would be closed so is it possible to visit this place
Written 18 May 2019
Well, there are some tulips growing but the huge fields have been "lopped" ( heads cut off) almost entirely by now. Kukenhof will be closed until next spring. I have been to Amsterdam in July and August and I have seen large flower fields from the Air so I know they exist. However, this is by and large a springtime event. There are lots of private gardens with flowers that you may find all over but nothing like Kukenhof. That said, Kukenhof is really a huge tourist trap - it's very beautiful and very crowded by design. Think Disneyland. Worth a visit as long as you understand what you are getting yourself into.

Does it open in autumn? We are visiting on the 25Th of October, will flowers be blooming? Will it be worth visiting?
Written 9 March 2019
Not Kukenhof, sorry. There are flowers blooming throughout the year but if you want to see the big tulip displays go in springtime.

Buonasera.

Buon viaggio
Aldo

We are visiting the bulb fields next Fri/Sat/Sun 13-15 April 2018. Will we see any blooms?
Written 3 April 2018
Yes, the season is late March- mid May with the high point in the second half of April

Do you have any idea which week will be the best to come in 2018?
Written 31 March 2018
Hi Joy,
Would you advise taking an organized tour from Amsterdam to see the gardens in early May or is it difficult to get there on our own from the center of town? If doing it on our own, do we take a bus or train? We will be there right after King's Day which will mean larger crowds.
