A master piece of history!

Beautiful small town with lots of history, we loved the beautiful square with lots of shops and cafes around. A great place to visit during the weekend when special market is seen.

I have been living in Amsterdam for a few months and I go to the Albert Cuyp Market in de Pijp on a regular basis. I was interested in seeing some other large markets with less tourists! This is a great one! My husband and I have a car, so it was only a 20 minute drive, but the GVB... More

The "grote markt" is a lively square with the city counsel building on one end, which has been added to over the centuries, and a number of nice restaurants and bars on the other end. A favourite of mine is Fortuyn.

We took the train down from Amsterdam Centraal to Haarlem, quick journey of 20 minutes. The market is just south of the station and less than 10 minutes walk away. Follow the crowds! We were there about 10 am. A few hours later, the crowd was heaving, but I guess that added to the excitement! It spreads over several streets.... More

Just a short train ride from central station in Amsterdam and you are there. Unfortunately there are no signs pointing to the market from the train station but all I did was follow the crowd. It opened at 1000 am and was already quite busy but It was packed when I left at 1pm! I spoke to some other tourists... More

We visited Haarlem for the Xmas market that takes place for a couple of days in December. It was really good, lots of stalls selling everything you would expect at a Xmas market. Plenty of opportunities for a mulled wine or hot chocolate to warm you up. Not too busy and bustly during the day but filled up by the... More

I love the Grote Markt, it is always busy here. Just walking around here during summer, autumn, winter or spring- the atmosphere is always special

If you want to visit Haarlem and want a good place to start, go to the heart of the city: The Grote Markt (Big/Great Market place). The place is a classical spot where the beautiful Big Church St. Bavo is hovering over the market place opposite the Town Hall. You can imagine how Haarlem was part of the trading community... More
