Such a great trip. So many different things to see, defiantly the best zoo I've been too. A lot of walking but worth it!

I have to say that I'm not really a 'zoo' type person and after reading a few reviews on here I was also a bit sceptical about visiting the zoo. But I was very pleasantly surprised, the zoo I've very clean, tidy and not smelly. It's really nice to see more than one breed of animal in different enclosures. All... More

Artis is a good zoo and I recommend it for couples and families. Beautiful place to stay inside and take photos.

Some of the exhibits seem easy for some unsupervised kids to run in. I am also quite surprised at their decision to house 3 lions in that small space. I expected more effort and thoughts put into in educating visitors about the animals, or providing meaningful interactions for public. I left without exploring the whole zoo. Families might like it... More

We visited this zoo after having recently visited another zoo in England. We were expecting a very similar experience however it was completely different! The animals were very unique and so interactive which was something we didn't receive as much at the other zoo! It was quite small however easy to get round in a decent amount of time and... More

It is a beautiful zoo and a must visit with the kids. One can observe lions, hunting dogs, elephants and various animals from close. The wallabies are freely roaming about in one particular park. The feeding times for sea lions and hunting dogs makes it more interesting. The must do also include sea lions, butterfly park, aquarium, small farm which... More

This zoo is nothing special and I do not think that it is totally worth it the price of the ticket. Casual enclosures of the animals, except for a few buildings such as the enclosure of the penguins. For example, Vienna zoo is a way better than this one. The only attraction in the zoo that I really enjoyed was... More

We spent the afternoon strolling round here looking at all the different types of animals. We particularly enjoyed the aquarium as it was a dark hall with illuminated tanks of fish on either side which you could sit and admire and there was also a section outside where you could go in with the wallabies without there being a fence... The layout of the park is easy to grasp and the "shows" with the animals are excellent. Especially the feeding of the sea lions was funny and informative at the same time. The only thing I would recommend to Artis is to also have an English version at the same time as the Dutch version.

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighbourhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
