Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. Interesting insights into the canals that define Amsterdam
The museum is in a house that is Tucktaway in one of the neighborhoods of Amsterdam. It takes about an hour for the entire tour, and it is self guided with audio assistive devices. I found the information to three dimensionalize the canals. How and why they were developed and what the current and future challenges will be for the canal system in Amsterdam Cost is about €17

A little gem of a museum
Visited the Canal museum on a rainy day with my 13 year old daughter. Was not as busy as many of the other museums we visited in Amsterdam which was refreshing. It is set in a stunning building with a beautiful garden. We both absolutely loved our visit, especially the interactive displays and innovative journey you are taken on through the history of Amsterdam. Highly recommend.

    Clever bite-sized museum
Informative, bite-size museum that explains how Amsterdam was built. Unusual format for a museum. Money well spent on this museum. Try the quiz in the lobby waiting area before you go on the tour.

    Great immersive museum
What a find! Really informative and immersive history of Amsterdam and its canals. We spent an hour there and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well worth spending the time and the money. It’s not large but really well thought out with models of houses and canals.

    Charming and informative museum
This little museum tells the story of Amsterdam’s canals and its beautiful houses. The museum has some very well done virtual displays, informative videos, and interactive models. This is my third visit to Amsterdam, and I feel as though I learned more in the hour I spent here at this museum, than on other tours previously.

    Lovely little museum
Lovely little museum takes about 1 hour 15 to see everything. Everything is present in a really innovative way. Not a huge amount of information but I really enjoy it. Helpful staff. Do the quiz in the waiting room while you wait.

An essential museum for any visitor to amsterdam.
An essential museum for any visitor to Amsterdam. We were told about this at the Houseboat museum otherwise would have completely missed this. It’s a very informative guided presentation that helps explain the history of the canals and then helps you to machinâtes and find your way around Amsterdam a lot better as a result!

Great way to understand Amsterdam’s historical development
This museum provides a great overview of the city and the canals that made her famous. Visitors are led from one room to the next, covering a variety of topics, to include the history of the building that houses the museum. If you’re at all interested in the history of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and/or canals/inland shipping then you should add this museum to your visit list. Note: visitors are provided an audio guide in a variety of languages, so language barriers are not an issue.

    Absolutely fascinating !
I wanted to try and understand the construction of the canals and the reclamation of land, that allowed Amsterdam to happen. Really interesting tour. It was quiet, I found it so fascinating, I asked if I could go back through for a second time .....

Fascinating - more museums should be like this
This little museum is great. It's not so much a history of the canals, more the history of Amsterdam through the story of the canals. We learnt so much about the history of the city. The exhibits are all audio visual. The large model house is intricate and beautiful. There are 5 guided rooms. Really recommend this.

Highly recommend this museum for visiting especially if you go on a boat ride along the canals. Amsterdam is a unique city owing to its canals and after visiting the museum you will understand how they were created, built and maintained. You are provided with audio guide and there are an interactive house and installations to see in the museum. It takes an hour for visit and you will get a lot of interesting information.

I've been to this museum a few times now, I brought international clients in the past and now my family, and even after a few visits it still doesn't get boring.
The audio visuals are done really nice and informative and within an hour you get great information about the history of the canals. Definitely worth a visit, besides the big, well known museums in town!

A wonderful place to visit. Very central and housed in a grand old Canal house with an accompanying garden. We all loved it. Upon arrival you’re given an audio guide which u activate each time you enter a room. The exhibits were beyond excellent. The dolls was was exceptionally thought through. I think if you’re making the visit to Amsterdam you may as well learn a bit about the history of the canal system. I had no idea it’s a UNESCO world heritage site. Finally it’s a short exhibition which ends with a modern photography exhibition. We were out within an 1hr and a bit. Do go!

A fascinating and brilliantly presented history of Amsterdam, set in a grand canal-side house. When you arrive it’s all quite plain but you then take an audio tour which is very cleverly done and takes you from room to room, going through time as Amsterdam develops. We were lucky to be the only two on our tour so I would recommend going at a quiet time. Our favourite room had a model of the very house you are in and you can look through the windows, swipe your earpiece and listen to what is happening in each room through the years, with projections of mini people inside. It gets quite meta as you can see into the room you’re in, with a model of the model… and so on! A really unusual but very interesting and entertaining museum - not really a museum in the usual sense at all but a refreshing change in that!

Entry to this museum is included with an IAmsterdam card (which I highly recommend). It's a very unique museum experience, immersive, and highly informative and engaging. This is great to do when you need to get off your feet a little bit because there are several opportunities to sit down. There's also a toilet in the basement. I think the experience was an hour or less; it was a great activity to do between bigger museums/activities (and with free entry and a free restroom!). We did this on a Friday afternoon and there were only 3 of us at the museum.

This is probably the best museum experience I’ve ever had!
Museum staff from all over the world should visit this place for inspiration. Never have I learnt so much history in 1/2 hour and enjoyed it all the way. Magic moments there. I can’t even imagine how they did it all, I mean technically?

Very unique experience. The audiovisual tour was very refreshing. Informative and very well displayed. Definitely come here if you want to learn more about the canals and a brief history on Amsterdam.

The only things to note are that it's relatively short (+/- 45 mins) and if you've seen other museums before this one, there will be some repetition in the things you hear. But if you're okay with that, then definitely visit this beautiful museum!

The first this we did when we arrived in Amsterdam was visit this museum. In about 90 minutes you will gain an understanding of why and how the canals were built, and the impact that had on the growth of the city.

The Museum is billed as 400 years of history in 40 minutes. It takes a bit more time, but it was well worth it. This very well designed Audio/Video exhibit takes you from the 1600’s through the 1900’s in a series of rooms that explain how the city was planned, how the canals were built, and how the homes were constructed. This really should be your first stop in Amsterdam.

Follow that up with a one hour canal tour by boat and you will have pretty good feel for the layout of the city.

Went expecting to wander round a rich merchant's house, and found instead a really engaging museum - modern, clever, interpretation telling the story of the creation of the Canal Belt in the C17th onwards, and how canal houses were built. Beautifully created models, film, avatars etc, with soundtrack, clever lighting and animation.
Takes about an hour and is worth that of anyone's time.
