Hema department stores are a great place to buy inexpensive items for the home and, strangely enough, to get freshly made delicious sandwiches. Their Filet Americain sandwich, which is similar to steak tartare (and nothing American about it) are absolutely delicious, served on fresh crusty baguette. We kept going back for more whenever we saw a Hema store during our... More

Very tasty and crunchy smoked sausage. It's a supermarket so you can see a long queue for the sausage. They also sell other pastries which is good too.

Well, i wasn't buy anything in Hema yet except the rookworst (smoked sausage) since i don't live permanently in the country. The rookworst were taste really good for me. I took it with including the bread, made it looks like a hotdog 😀 combine with mustard. I bought it in Schiphol Plaza anyway. Enjoy!!!

When I go visit family abroad, I always buy very Dutch items at Hema. Always "stroopwafels", licorice. And this store is also great to have a quick lunch too.

One of the bargain tips we've picked up during our Amsterdam research is probably the most economical breakfast in town - at the department store Hema it's possible to buy a baguette with an omelette and bacon, with a croissant and jam and a coffee and OJ for only €2.25 each. Just a coffee can set you back €2.50 -... More

Staying in Centrum

Neighbourhood Profile
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
