This area in the oldest part of Amsterdam is known for the red neon windows that display barely-dressed prostitutes advertising their services; it's all perfectly acceptable as long as it stays inside this designated area of the city.

I have been to the place years ago...this time I was a little suprised with the emptiness of the windows. Ladies left apparantly. We were told "now clubs are popular". Still the area was packed with tourists.

When the sun sets, take a walk through. Even if you don't intend to indulge.. It's very interesting for the 'window shopping'. It's not intimidating at all!

Prostitution is legal in Amsterdam and they take steps to make sure that sex workers are protected, healthy, and not trafficked. Many of the women work in glass fronted rooms. They dance and try to entice people into paying them for sex. Far from being...More

A must for those who visited Amsterdam, it’s a culture that is unique here and none else. A very interesting cultural experience.

Once you get past the overt sexuality, this really just becomes like any other shopping strip (no pun intended). It's very transactional, just every day business. There's nothing tawdry or smutty or taboo about the place. The customers walked in and out of the establishments...More

Great to walk round and very interesting, we saw a peep show and just wondered round the canals. Nice way to spend a evening seeing the sites!

When in Rome! I would go just to say you went. The bars are a bit seedy and they give you wine in a tumbler. This area is not the nicest so steer clear at night

One of the more famous and perhaps seedy parts of Amsterdam it is nonetheless well worth a bit of time on your trip. It is set on one of the prettier canals (in my opinion) which makes it all the more striking when you get...More

Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the
Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its
saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to
view some of the city’s most picturesque canals,
historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples
of traditional local architecture – not to mention
Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist
temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some

Coffee shops are everywhere so finding one will be very easy. Staff are usually very patient and friendly.
