Don't leave Amsterdam before visiting Van Gogh Museum. I suggest to buy tickets online to avoid wasting your time queuing. Every piece of art is worth looking at. The collection is amazing and although there are so many rooms, its very easy to follow according to the time the works were painted. Truly enjoyable.

Van Gogh's paintings deserve a less market-oriented approach. Before we reached his paintings, we had to go through two floors of shops.

This is a great venue which does this 'master' proud. The Gallery is well thought out and with an audio 'tour' is a 'must-see' venue in Amsterdam. Thoroughly recommend.

We came here on a weekend and were surprised about the long line in front of the Ticket Office. So we bought the tickets online (we didn't find a homepage in english, only in dutch). The museum was nice. We took an audioguide. I think it was worth it. After visiting the museum we went into the gift shop and... More

This museum, quite appropriately, gives an in depth look at the life and changing work of Van Gogh. The collection spans throughout his career, but is missing some of the most famous pieces (which are at other museums). I'll admit I'm not overly familiar with his works, but one sunflower painting was all I recognized. Worth it for the story... More

This was a good museum with many lovely paintings by Van Gogh and other artists, but I was really disappointed when we finished the museum and there was no mention or image of Starry Night, my favourite Van Gogh painting. Even in the gift shop there was no memorabilia of this very famous painting. The museum was very busy when... More

The museum entrance really sets up the visit well. Very convenient and well organised cloakroom facilities which helps at this coat wearing time of year. Thought the paintings were displayed really well with plenty of space in the galleries. We took about 2 hours looking around late morning and then had snack in very good restaurant and then got a... Impressive collection of the artist's work showing how his work developed. However it was very crowded and lacked the bright colours I've seen on online pictures and prints. Must be a great experience for dedicated fans. For more casual visitors, the Stedelijk next door offers a more varied and exciting selection of modern art with fewer queues.

Staying in Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)

Neighbourhood Profile
Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.
