A must see in Amsterdam but it will get quite crowded so it is best to arrive early. Van Gogh's work is generally done on quite small canvas so you will want to get up close to view them. Therefore the less people the better your opportunity.

Long queues so get organised before you travel. Very helpful staff. The audio tour is well worth doing or you could miss so much.

Unbeatable monument to van Gogh's life and art, with rotating exhibits from other artists who inspired or were inspired by the master himself. The main hall spirals up from his youth to death. Buy tickets in advance if you can.

Keeping me entertained for two hours and a half is a plus for my own record. I didn't expect to like Van Gogh's ideas so much. I can't wait to go again

I studied Van Gogh's paintings in High School so it was lovely to see them in person. Very interesting and would definitely recommend!

I liked the museum itself, and if you like the impressionism and post impressionism movement, then you will like it too. However I really thought the focus was going to be more on Van Gogh and his works, rather than so much focused on talking about his family, his brother particularly, and showcasing more so the artwork of his artist... The most famous Van Gogh's works are obviously not here. The major part of exhibition is devoted to the beginning of Van Gogh's artist path. Please be aware that queues are terribly long, buy tickets in advance!

Arrived for Monday morning opening at 9 am so was first in the gallery. Beautifully presented with good information on Van Gogh's life, family and key artistic relationships supported by examples of influential pieces. Spacious and light setting but clearly able to deal with large volumes of visitors. Spent a good hour and a half there to see it all.

Staying in Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)

Neighbourhood Profile
Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.
