Top ways to experience Van Gogh Museum
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.

- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada2,047 contributionsExcellent ExperienceWe are very happy we booked tickets in advance and booked tickets with the multimedia tour. The multimedia device they give you allows you to get some detailed and interesting facts about the art and Van Gogh. Some of the pieces have an interactive element that can be done through the touch screen which could be enjoyed by many ages but I'd recommend that the user be at least 10 years old to better appreciate it. The multimedia tour can give you details on many paintings or just the highlights. The current Gustav Klimt exhibit also uses the multimedia tour and is very engaging for a side exhibit. Areas around popular Van Gogh paintings get very busy but we found we were able to still enjoy them from a distance with a brief viewing up close. If our friends were interested in visiting we would probably tell them to make a reservation first thing and do the Van Gogh areas first because the patrons linger around his most popular works. The multimedia device made everything more interesting, I learned alot about Van Gogh that I didn't know before and the highlights tour takes about 45 minutes. It would be easy to spend 2 hours here enjoying the Van Gogh installations and special exhibits. We appreciated the gift shop, clean bathrooms and free lockers too. The cafe and restaurant also looked interesting and not too overly priced so you could plan to spend more time here if you were keen to do so. It is a beautiful building and space. We’re happy to hear you enjoyed your visit.Written 11 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 December 2022
- Darryl SVictoria, Canada115 contributionsBook a lot of timeIf you are at all interested in painting and art, this museum is a must. Here not only do you see Van Gogh's original art, but you can get close enough to see each brush stroke. The museum is will planned and the audio guide (extra cost) is easy to use and has insightful commentary. I would highly recommend renting the audio guide. The only fault in the whole visit was self inflicted in that we didn't schedule enough time. Our next trip to Europe will find me back in this museum to continue my exploration af a fascinating artist and his incredible work.Thank you for the positive recommendation!Written 11 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Written 8 December 2022
- John TSouth Saint Paul, Minnesota120 contributionsOutstanding MuseumIt would hard to envision a more complete museum for dedicated to one artist. The museum is well laid out and information placards really recreate Van Gogh journey. I need a wheel chair assist. They are very well organized with a reservation system for wheelchairs. The staff was very helpful and kind thorough out. - TanyaPinkLondon, United Kingdom196 contributionsloved it!What a great museum. I loved all the Van Gogh paintings and drawings. That was the main reason obviously. A bonus were that they had paintings from other artists such as Gustav Klimt and Aubrey Beardsley. You can easily spent good few hours in this museum which was perfect for us as it was freezing outside in Amsterdam in November. We're humbled to hear you were moved to tears when visiting our museum!Written 11 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2022Written 9 December 2022
- Rebecca10 contributionsCool MuseumThis was a very interesting museum. I am not much of an art person but found it interesting with my knowledge of Van Gogh. I would recommend stopping by while you are in Amsterdam. I did the museum in about two hours with no audio guide. There are enough plaques and readings if you don't want the audio guide.Thank you for the positive recommendation!Written 11 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2022Written 10 December 2022
- FerrisXLAmsterdam, The Netherlands399 contributionsComprehensive collectionIf you like the art of Van Gogh- make sure not to miss this museum. It has probably the most complete collection of this Dutch painter, including some of his most famous pieces of art (sunflowers, alond blossoms, self portraits, the potato eaters...). Presented in a fresh, modern way. Audio guide tours are available. Make sure to book your ticket and timeslot ahead via the museum’s website because this museum is usually fully booked for several days in advance, even during off-season.Thank you for the positive recommendation!Written 11 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Written 10 December 2022
- Renee SEast Setauket, New York113 contributionsFantastic and well organized museumI love impressionist art and especially Van Gogh so I expected to love the museum. But there were a few things which I really appreciated about this place. One is that the curation and signage was excellent (English & Dutch). Even though I read the book with Vincent's letters to Theo years ago, I learned a lot more about Vincent's life in this museum. The collection of works is large and includes many other artists than Van Gogh. And there was a fabulous temporary exhibit of Gustave Klimt while I was there. This was a big bonus that I did not have to pay extra for.Thank you for the positive recommendation!Written 19 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Written 15 December 2022
- Christine RuizLouisville, Kentucky13 contributionsA must see…Amongst the many museums located in Amsterdam, this one in particular I knew was a must see. Such a story this man come from. The museum highlights both his highs and lows extremely well. I highly recommend making a ticket reservation purchase in advance. I also recommend only arriving 5-10 min before your scheduled time. Every floor gave representation of Van Gogh in a different part of his life. You can opt to purchase audio for the museum if you’d like a detailed description. I chose to walk and absorb the environment, paintings and history. My ticket also included the Golden Boy exhibit which is set to be completed in early January. Overall, I had an enjoyable time and highly recommend if in Amsterdam.Thank you for the positive recommendation!Written 19 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2022Travelled soloWritten 16 December 2022
- DuncanTCHEast Greenbush, New York1,272 contributionsWell curated and displayed...an excellent museumThe Van Gogh Museum is really an excellent museum. The pieces are well displayed and well explained (in multiple languages). The flow throughout the museum is good, so even in front of the most famous pieces, the crowds are not too terrible. Several pieces of advise. First, most definitely purchase tickets in advance...if you think you're just going to arrive and walk in, you are sadly mistaken. Second, get a guide of some sort...either audio or one in person. But there are so many pieces that unless you know Van Gogh exceptionally well, you will be overwhelmed. And finally, having listen to many, many American tourists ask, remember this...."Starry Night" is NOT at the Van Gogh Museum, so don't be disappointed.Thank you for the positive recommendation!Written 19 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2022Written 17 December 2022

The museum presented a great chronicle of artists work and life. I t is best to have times tickets. It wasn't overcrowded but there were enough people for a Thursday afternoon in November.

A wonderful chance to see the brilliance of one of the world’s most renowned artist. It just felt like it missed a certain cherry on top.

I love Van Gogh and was expecting so much more.
There's not even references to his other works around the world.
The museum closes too early. I couldn't even see the temporary exhibition.
Shop prices are absurd.

This was a wonderful museum! Make sure you book well in advance. They have limited admission and it is by appointment. If you wait until the few days before you will likely be out of luck.
Make sure you pay the fee for the multimedia player. Well worth the few euros.

Third trip here, and all have focused on a different aspect of Van Gogh's life. We really enjoyed our visit, got here early in the morning and while the museum was busy, it was easy to spend the time to stop and enjoy each of the paintings as we went through the museum. Enjoyed the special display of some of the few Van Gogh works that were on loan from private collections. Find a way to purchase a ticket, you will not be dissappointed.

we visited but came away feeling very disappointed. there was no pattern or structure to how people moved around the gallery and this made it feel like a bit of a free for all. lots of his major works were not visible due to being on loan to other galleries. had we known this we would not have visited.

Absolutely loved this museum, my sister and I got absorbed in it for hours. I didn’t know a huge amount about Van Gogh beforehand but by the end of our tour I felt like I had learned a huge amount. We found it very emotional learning about his mental health issues and loved how the museum didn’t shy away from this. Amazed also by how many paintings he had done and there were other artists’ paintings also on display which we hadn’t expected.
We had a light lunch in the cafe which was very good. The shops had lovely things to buy and I felt more inclined to purchase after doing the whole audio tour. Loved the fact that the lockers were free of charge & all the hangers for coats. It was pouring rain while we were there and we left our umbrella in the stand to dry and it was still there 4 hours later. A fantastic experience.

Several years ago, I was delighted to go to the Immersive Van Gogh Experience in Paris. It was equally exciting to immerse in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam! What a great talent who was tormented for most of his adult life and died too young. Thankfully, his legacy lives on!
The permanent collection includes over 200 paintings and 500 drawings of Vincent Van Gogh. The museum is well organized and takes you through the artistic maturity and growth of Van Gogh. Van Gogh lived with his brother Theo in Paris for a time. His early paintings were softer and resembled impressionist art. He later experimented using complimentary colors to give his art an emotional charge, as well as not painting scenes in their natural colors but contrasting colors to make them more dramatic. Many of Van Gogh's masterpieces were created after he was institutionalized, including Starry Night. Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime - 'The Red Vineyard' - painted during his time in Arles, France.
The Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, was probably our most memorable experience during our holiday in Amsterdam.

This is an attraction dedicated to one of the most notable Dutch figures in history, and I encourage you to visit if you appreciate his art and want to learn more about his life story.
There appeared to be two buildings that are labeled the Van Gogh Museum. I was a little confused where to enter at first, but they are actually connected, and the correct entrance will be where you clearly see through the glass where there are escalators and a large walking area below. You will also most likely see a long line, so that's the biggest indicator that you're in the right spot. The second building is where guests can enter from inside to begin their tour and also head to the gift shop and exit the building.
Make sure you arrive near your scheduled time, anything too early or too late will have you turned away at the front. Once you are inside, head down the escalators and go to the desk that provides the audio headset that guides you throughout your tour. Frankly though, it was more of an audio accompaniment to relax me amongst the large crowds.
The headset should be used by approaching the painting that you want to learn about and pressing the play button to hear its history. However, because there were so many attendees and so little space to truly immerse yourself in Gogh's work, I just played everything back-to-back as I roamed around aimlessly.
It did get a little calmer as I walked up the 2nd and 3rd floors, but I felt overwhelmed by the many people and loud noises about. Since this is a family-friendly environment, expect a lot of children/babies as well.
I left the attraction overstimulated, regretting visiting on a Sunday afternoon. If I had more time in my vacation, then I would've visited on a weekday instead.
The content itself expands upon the knowledge you may already have about the late artist; proving that there was more to his personality that the infamy he obtained from cutting off his ear. The museum does well in chronicling his beginning to his end, and why his work is still admired today.
He is an inspirational figure who had a tragic life, but through that I learned to always try and improve myself and the support of your love ones can take you a long way in life.
I'm glad I got to visit the museum. I advise future guests to visit on a weekday (during school hours), if possible, as it can get super crowded that you'll have to miss out on some art. Otherwise, the place was neat and informative, with so many cool souvenirs you could buy, I wish I could've bought them all. I only paid for a magnet and glasses case of my favorite painting that day, "Almond Blossom" because the story behind why Gogh painted it encourages me to love hard and stay strong even in the midst of internal struggle.

The Van Gogh museum really gave you a feel for Van Gogh's life and struggles. I highly recommend the audio tour and to take your time (we did NOT do the 45 minute highlight tour). We took our time and came away with a much better appreciation of his art and life. I never knew there were so many different versions of his self portraits. There was even a small Pokemon exhibit paying homage to Van Gogh.

Tickets Not Received By Email
Hi, I purchased 2 tickets for the Van Gogh museum Amsterdam on 11 April 2023. I had a screen confirmation to say the purchase has gone through and the money has been taken from my bank. But I have not received an email confirmation. I have emailed Info@vangoghmuseum.nl but I never get a response. How can I get my tickets? Thank you

I didn’t book my ticket in advance but online day before - I think we were very lucky to be honest - booking online before you arrive is HIGHLY recommended by me & all travellers - it removes some stress & helps to structure your holiday- I really wanted to see the Vermeer Collection - first time ever most of the worlds Vermeer Collection has been in one spot - most museums & some private collectors agreed to the temporary ‘ loan’ - not even my Amsterdam manager of our hotel could get a ticket - but if I can manage a ticket anytime soon / before the V. I . collection leaves the city / I would return in a flash …. Hope above helps - Good luck - Enjoy yr Adventure 🥰
