About
De Oldehove is an unfinished church tower in the medieval centre of the Dutch city of Leeuwarden. It leans more than the tower of Pisa in Italy. Open for visits from mid April till end of October.

This very beautiful, old tower is quite leaning, but that also gives it an extra charm. In 1595 the accompanying church collapsed, since then the tower stands alone. When the tower was only ten meters high it already started to subside! The tower can be visited with a local guide.

A less known example of leaning structure, compared to the Pisa tower. This is a tower suffering, since its construction, of differential settlements so evident to determine the abortion of the project. The weak geotechnical characteristics of soft soil in Leeuwarden may also be deducted in many other ancient (17th-18th century) leaning buildings in the old city.

Mid 1500s an attempt to build a huge tower in the Frisian capital failed. All what is left, is a robust, but leaning structure. Like in Pisa, the foundation in soft sediment proved to be not good enough.

City planners did a good job in integrating the historic tower in the new square set up. The ensemble (city hall, visitor center, tower, statue, trees) looks fine.

A challenging and arduous walk to the top is rewarded by a bird's eye view of the whole of Leeuwarden.

The town planners have created a large open square in front of the Old Tower which makes it easy to see how much it leans. One can visit inside and climb to the top. The square is on the edge of Leeuwarden and is a short walk to other attractions.

De Oldehove is a wonderful place to visit if you are into history, architecture, and engineering. You would adore the craftsmanship of the it. They have a presentation before climbing the stairs to the top. Pleas keep in mind this is a historical building so the stairs is not what you may be accustom to. They are narrow and steep. Also, it goes around in circles. The final stairway is kind of low so we had to bend a little to get up. In all, it was a great experience and when you reach the top you have a wonderful view to behold too.

You can't come all the way to Leeuwarden and not stop by. Serious lean! Once you learn to look for these leaning structures in the Netherlands, you see them all over (churches, homes, etc) because so many structures are built on pilings in the mud and after a few years (like De Oldenhove) or 100 years (like the houses and churches) - they begin to take on a real lean.

De Oldehove can be termed 'The leaning tower of Leeuwarden'. The tower, though not spectacular, is still quite an interesting site to see. I believe you have the option of getting to the top for a small fee. Worth a visit if in the area.
