The Fries Museum is dedicated to Friesland and the Frisian people. Its activities revolve around the eleven cities that make up the province and the surrounding countryside. These include the Frisians' love-hate relationship with water, the search for what defines the typical Frisian character, and Friesland's place in the wider world. The freedom fighter Grutte Pier's sword; old costumes and clothing; treasures from the Frisian mounds; the legacy of Mata Hari, the exotic dancer who was executed as a spy at the end of the First World War; Gerrit Benner's paintings; contemporary visual art; and the film de Overval: together these objects tell the story of Friesland.

The museum is really state-of-the-art, it looks great. For such a huge buildings, it doesn't take that long to see all the exhibitions, but they are pretty interesting. The exhibition about Mata Hari was disappointing, as it was rather small. However, the exhibition related to cotton was great, and so was the one about recycling. Overall, a really interesting place... More

the Fries museum is a must see if visiting Leeuwarden. It has an excellent range of exhibitions and a good cafe and shop.

We really enjoyed the fantastic exhibition on Tadema and the trip to Leeuwarden was worth it. However the other objects in the museum are mostly injteresting for local people and will have a hard time attracting international visitors. Maybe with the exception of those with frisian roots.

Great new building, lots of public place, but oh so small when having a great exhibition. Information around objets in display often to meagre. Recentje exhibition of Alma-Tadema; littje attention to development of style, connections to the art climate in general etc.

I went to the Fries Museum for the excellent Alma Tadema exhibition, but visited afterwards also the permanent collection. These collections are interesting and give a good insight in the Frisian culture. Some parts may be enriched further: in some parts of the new building you get a feeling that the building is too big for the collection... Some organization... More

The museum has a nice look and modern feel. On the saturday we visited it was quite crowded especially at the beginning of the exposition. The latter part was more quite. The cafe was a bit disappointing in the service and quality of food

Most fellow visitors came to see the Alma-Tadema exhibition. Not quite my cup of tea, but the display, with painting juxtoposed to film fragments whose mise en scene was inspired by them was clever and spectacular. We came for the inspiring and warm textile art by Claudy Jongstra, who also created a permanent woven backdrop for the reception. Beautiful, intriguing... More

Visited the special exhibition of Friesland's famous son Lawrence (Lourens) Alma-Tadema. Very nice exhibition. Very nice (modern) museum, including a permanent WWII Dutch resistance exhibit. Helpful staff. Nice museum café.
