This was a must-see activity in the city.  Even though it was a steep uphill climb, it was worth at the end.  We could admire the river and city fascinating panoramic views through the platform.   Comfortable and peaceful atmosphere.  Relaxation.

This is a nice spot to relax and watch the busy area around the river. I brought some Prosecco with...and if you stick around long enough, it can be very peaceful. This is officially one of my favourite spots in Zurich.

The Lindenhofplatz is the oldest part of Zurich at an elevated position in the old town.
When walking from the main railway station, it will be above the right bank of the Limmat river. You need to take an easy walk up to an elevated plateau where's a park with benches overlooking the entire town. Beneath it are Roman ruins, the oldest part of the city, but they're not in great shape and not that interesting.
Close by is the St. Peter's Church.

My daughter's name is Linden so I'm biased with my appreciation for this plaza. But it really is lovely. There's a statue of Linden, the woman hero. There's great views, park benches and linden trees! The old city around it is fantastic for window shopping and photography.

Save this place for a time when the weather gives some visibility. Hike up the hill and take photos of the river and get your bearings before conquering the Old Town on the other side of river. On a nice day, buy some cured meats and wine on Rennwegg and enjoy the elevated perspective near one of the fountains.

Easy to get to, bit of a steep climb for a few hundred metres but manageable.

Views overlooking river are very nice probably best place in Zurich for helicopter view.

Not much else around lookout so only need 5 - 10 minutes tops.

First of all, I really recommend you go here. It is a beautiful view of the city, river and old town. I have been taking visitors to this place for years, but for some reason I recently thought there must be more to the place than just the view - and there is.

Did you know:
- This square and surrounding area shows signs of settlements dating back to 1500 BC
- There is a confirmed Celtic (Helvetic) settlement dating back to around 100 BC
- The Romans used the hill for a Citadel with 8 to 10 towers.
- Parts of the current wall facing the river today was part of this citadel
- On a grave stone found here in 1747, sta(tionis) Turicen(sis) was referenced. This shows that there was a roman customs/toll station there AND Turicum, the roman name for Zurich is referenced. It places the name name firmly in 200 AD though it is believed to originate from the Helvetics.
- You can see a replica of the above mentioned gravestone (for Lucius Aelius Urbicus, the son of the head of the Toll/customs station) in Pfalzgasse - the cobbled stone street leading down into the old town right across the square from the parking garage Urania
- When Zurich went to war with Winterthur in the 13th century, so many men fell that Zurich was practically left defenceless. Winterthur placed an army at the walls of Zurich hoping to take the defenceless city. The Zurich women dressed up as worriers with long pointy sticks appearing to be spears and stood on Lindenhofplatz causing the army from Winterthur to think that they had no chance against the Zurich army so they went home to Winterthur without attacking

You see, Lindenhofplatz is much more than just a nice view. It is the root of Turicum or Züri as it is called in Swiss German today (which is incidently extremely close to Zürih, which it was called around year 800 when the name Zurich was first recorded)

Enjoy the view!!

Climbing up the short hill overlooking Zurich’s Limmat River is a must-do when exploring the Altstadt or Old Town. It is a perfect culmination to a couple of hours wandering around and up narrow Medieval streets. This small hill, a glacial moraine, is possibly the site of the original human settlement in the area. Following the retreat of the glacier which left this pile of debris behind, the hill was surrounded by swampland. It was an obvious and dry location to live on as well as a location easier to defend due to its elevation. Bronze Age communities were followed by Celtic settlements, which were then taken over by the Romans in the early 1st Century CE. The Romans built a fort in the 4th Century CE as a defense against Germanic tribes to the north. There are no traces of the Roman era to be seen on the hill and the public park. After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire the Carolingian and Ottonian dynasties ruled the area and build their own fortified palaces - Kaiserpfalz - on the the hill. Just as the stones of the Roman fort were used to build the Kaiserpfalz so too were the remnants of the Kaiserpfalz scavenged to build the city walls as well as houses in the old city. The oath sealing the Helvetic Constitution of 1798 took place on the Lindenhof.

This open space is kept shaded by the many namesake linden trees. We visit the park during late winter / early spring on this trip as well as another one 7-8 years before that. The first time we visit during late morning and it was a quiet place, perfect for taking in the view over the Limmat River at the rest of the city across the river. The second visit took place right around sunset and there were definitely a lot more people lined up agains the wall enjoying the sunlight and the changing colors as the setting sun bathed the city buildings in a warm glow. I could hear blue tits singing in the trees above us. It was a calm and soothing place to relax in, a stark contrast from the bustling Bahnhofstrasse nearby.

Lindenhofplatz in Zurich is one of those places where people just know how to get to. Located in old part of Zurich, one of the most attractive thing about it is that it gives you a bird’s eye view of Zurich Old Town, the City Hall, Grossmunster Church, etc. This hillside park is great for strolling around and people watching. Lindenhofplatz opens to a square that has lovely fountain and trees. From the terrace you can see a gorgeous view the Limmat River and the mountains that stretch into the distance.
