The National Museum enjoys a central position just a minute’s walk from the main railway station in Zurich. The museum is one of the attractions of this city on the River Limmat. Gustav Gull’s listed building from the 19th century has been extended with the addition of a new building designed by architects Christ & Gantenbein and completed in summer 2016. The museum showcases the history of Switzerland from its early beginnings until the present day in the permanent exhibitions “Archaeology in Switzerland”, “History of Switzerland” and “Collections Gallery”. Every year, there are also several temporary exhibitions and an impressive fringe programme, offering everything from debates to workshops.

It was nice to learn about the history of Zurich and parts of Switzerland across a few different rooms and floors. The section around World War II and the Swiss role with the Soviets was probably the most interesting to see, and the temporary photo...More

Perhaps it's because of the major renovation being undertaken, which means that a large section is closed off until 2021, but there really wasn't that much here to appeal to non-Swiss visitors. Signage was poor, especially for anything in English, relegated to the bottom in...More

Dear yankeefan730, we are sorry about your negative experience at the Swiss National Museum. Switzerland has four official languages and as a national museum, we are obliged to hold our exhibitions in three of them plus English. As there is limited space, the some languages...More

Enjoyed the museum very much, thought it was good value for money. The museum also has clean, accessible toilets and a lovely cafe. So even if you don't go through the displays, it is well worth a visit.

Some of the logistics of display were new to me, but the displays could have been more organized. I always feel like it's important to learn the history and culture of the country and people you are visiting. Perhaps too much emphasis is put on...More

Incorporating technology & activities, this splendid museum will give you an experience that is both informative and entertaining. I couldn't enjoy to the fullest as I reached just 1 hour before the closing time. I recommend at least 2 hours to experience this place.

The Landesmuseum is one of the best history museums I have visited. Interesting, informative, educational and entertaining at the same time it gives a great overview of Swiss history from Prehistory, to the Romans, to the origins of the country in the Middle Ages, to...More

Quite fascinating museum that covers a wide spectrum of history in well laid out exhibits. Some interesting thought has been put into entertaining young minds. Also good for clean toilets and a café.

There was seriously something for everyone. Kids were occupied with the interactive technology exhibits. You don't need to spend the whole day here but we ended up doing the new part of the museum in the morning, having a quick and good lunch at the...More

There is not a huge amount to see here - 4 or 5 exhibitions but it's still good for a couple of hours. This being Switzerland, there are large Ipads that contain games etc dotted around (I think they'd be stolen anywhere else!) Museum is...More

I know that I am late to answer, but I would like to add that if the lockers at the museum are not large enough to hold your bag - the train/bus station is just across the street. They have lockers for bags as well.
