I am sure the tunnel is quicker, but you can't see anything from a tunnel. This road is a bit hairy on the Swiss side...better on the the Italian side. Fantastic climb to the pass...up-close views of mountain formations that look unreal.

We had a specular drive through the Great St Bernard Pass. There's a lovely little local restaurant at the top. The views from the top are breath-taking.

Don't be put off by the extra drive: it was very easy and only added about 30 minutes. Plus, the scenery was simply amazing, both getting up the Swiss side and coming down the Italy side. What better way to cross into another country. We...More

This is the longer way to cross the border from Italy to Switzerland (adds about 40 minutes to the trip) but the crossing is breathtaking and worth the detour. Once at the top you can see across the mountains and on a clear day the...More

We did not take the tunnel; we went over the pass so I can't speak to the tunnel. We did not have to stop at any customs office and simply drove from Switzerland to Italy.
