Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was our second mountain in the Lugano region which we hiked. The hiking starts at the base of the mountain. The hike was though the forest with a lake view all the time. There were two passage along the hiking path where the trees were broken blocking the path but you can navigate with ease if you are sporty. Hopefully the broken tree will be cleaned soon. Otherwise highly recommended hike for family.

We walked up to Monte Bre after having done the short Olive trail by the lake starting from Lugano city center. Indications are easy and it’s a pleasant ascension through the forest to end-up with a beautiful view on the lake and the mountains. It’s about 3h for the entire walk from Lugano with a descend with the funicular.

If you do an easy 30min (each way 1km) hike or walk, there is no need to take the expensive funicular. I took bus 12 to Brè, Paese and follow the signs towards Monte Brè. There are two routes: via Bare and via Scantinata alla Torretta, I took the quicker route. Elevation gain is gentle at 100m. There are hundreds of steps of well paved stairs, with gentler slope towards the top.

Note that there are not many views along the trail - basically seeing steps and mainly trees, though some views can be seen from the paranomic viewpoints and the restaurant.

We went up with the funicular from Lugano, short nice ride. Above we walked around and has beautiful views from anywhere. On the way back we walked it down, which was a nice walk trough a neighborhood with nice houses and views till we’re back downtown. On a nice day it’s a lovely way to spend your day and see gorgeous views over the lakes

Goog walk from town or easy in the funicular, be careful it can get busy. We then walked to the very top of Mt Boglia. Well worth the extra climb but make sure you take water and know how to read a map! One path is pretty easy the other in much steeper.

Steep price, for not much views, unless you find a seat at one of the two terraces/restaurants. I could find no seat, so went immediatelly down.
Monte San Salvatore is much nicer and the viewing platform is free.

We went by car. Narrow and sometimes one way only, we had to backwards to allow other car pass. Few parking spots on the restaurant. Maybe 15? We went on Friday at 10:30am. Still empty.
2 restaurants.
Best reserve before to have good seats.

What is good about monte Bre compared to San Salvatore is that it is reachable by bus 12. It is five times cheaper than funicular. You can get off on the last stop and take a look of fabulous village Bre, and then continue going up by feet to see panoramic view. That will save your time, energy and money!
In case of having a car, you can also go up and leave it in the parking near to the church of the village Bre.

I love being up on the Monte Bré. You have a spectacular view. Go up there, but just for this,

Don't take the cable car. It's nostalgic, that's charming. But otherwise a lot of hassle. If you have your dog with you, be careful that he doesn't ge caught or even strangled and the metallic turning doors. The most stupid thing to put here, where you definitely will have people with dogs.

Don't try to pay the cable car with any kind of cards. You can't and staff are not really helpful. Either cash or forget it.

Don't try to visit any of the restaurants up there, if you're not coming in the main season. They do not care, even on a sunny day like today. You don't get anything to eat all over the mountain if you are visiting on a Monday or Tuesday. Are people not eating on these days? Strange attitude.

With all the "don'ts" nothing really remains, but the view. And that's great - best you drive up to Bré Paese and take your own food with you. Have a picknick on such a beautiful sunny November day...

Lugano is our favorite city in the world and we come here as often as we can. Climbing Monte Bre is best by car, the road is so beautiful and you can look down on the lake and enjoy the greenery and trees upto the very top. There is a nice yet modest resturant at the top with a balcony where you can relax and enjoy the stunning view of lake Lugano and the whole area. Going up with the cable car is also a good option
