Very nice trip thru the Alpes with Bernina Express. We’ve traveled from St. Moritz to Tirano on the 2nd class, which is not bad, but the train was fully booked, so we could not take good pictures as the windows had always somebody also taking...More
We started out in Lugano on the bus for three hours which flew by, great sites. It stopped 1.5 hours at an excellent bus stop where you could buy great food to take on bus and train. Then got on the train , not as...More
I'd heard good things about this journey but I was still blown away at how superb the route is, how the landscape changes from green to white to green. The train line itself is interesting, with viaducts leading into tunnels, and rotating on themselves to...More
Wonderful train journey from Chur to Tirano. Stunning scenery the entire way, with an audio guide and leaflet provided giving information on the various locations passed. Seats were comfortable and clean, although a lack of luggage space was a little inconvenient.

I think it is either or of the two expresses, you don't have the time to do both. I am assuming you are arriving in the country at Zurich so I would say that you could take a standard train from Zurich to Chur and Chur you could do a day on the Bernina Express which basically heads south into the Alps, crosses just over the Italian border and then goes all the way back to Chur this would take a whole day, but the scenery is lovely, you don't say which time of year this is, so the train traverses high mountains so there will be either be lots of snow or green hills. Then if you had time on your third day you could do a day trip to St Moritz etc, but Chur/Zurich looks a decent trip over to Basel. OR Go Zurich to Chur and from there you could get the Glacier Express as far as Brig (so this is something like a 5/6hrs journey through mountains) where you would need to get another train probably to Spiez and then on to Basel......but I have no idea how long that would all take, so you need to break it down exactly how much free time you have once you have arrived in the country and between when you need to be in Basel. You have options but timing is of the essence......and you will need to book in advance for either of the express trains. If it is any help we preferred Bernina, but there is not much between them both. We did other trains to get around so haven't bothered going into all that. Plan Plan and Plan to maximise your time.

I think if you are trying to fit the Bernina and Florence both into a 3 day period, then I don't think you have the time to do both. Based on our experience last week, when we got on the Bernina at Chur. The train left the station at 0830hrs as I recall, so you would have to be at your embarking point the night before, as the journey always seem to be an early departure from the Chur area. So that realistically is going to take up one day of travel from Basle. The trip from Chur was 4hrs one way to Tirano. Then we did the trip back again, so the trip took the whole day. If you did the Bernina just one way to Tirano, then you would have to investigate the transport possibilities to get to Florence, again this would take up another day if it was possible. Then that sounds like it would leave you perhaps half a day in Florence as you'd then need to travel back to the lake.
I may not have got your travel plans exactly, but I think you don't have enough time to do both and if you tried to do it all, would you enjoy it rushing from place to place...holidays need no time pressure stress!
