Enjoying the beauty of Kleine Scheidegg and wondering what else you can do to take in the scenic views of the Eiger, MΓΆnch, and Jungfrau mountains? Take a short jaunt down to the Wengernalp train station where you can catch the train down to Wengen, or even back up to Kleine Scheidegg if you want to go down the other side into Grindelwald.
Your roughly 30-minute walk can be extended as you rest on benches along the way, soaking in the mountain scenery. During the summer, you will likely be treated to views of cows grazing below, the ringing of their bells reaching up to you, you can even purchase alpine cheese and other snacks from the farm stand beside the path.
Having left the busyness of the Kleine Scheidegg station, you will be happy to savour the tranquility of this iconic mountain scenery.
Directions: From the outdoor seating area at the Kleine Scheidegg station, walk across the Jungfraujoch train tracks and follow the yellow hiking sign that points down the gravel path (see my photos).
Distance: 2.26 km (1.4 miles)
Ascent: 7 m
Descent: 193 m
Hiking Time: 34 minutes

Amazing plateau that serves trains going up and down from Jungfraujoch and also connects Lauterbrunnen to Grindlewald. It looks beautiful in spring and is great in winter when the skiing paths open up with the snow. Highly recommend visiting and this can be accessed for free using regional passes and swiss travel passes.

Took the train from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg stopped for some lunch then walked down the toboggan path to Allmend. This path is shared with skiers and toboggans to start with then just toboggans. It is quite steep in places and some form of snow grips on your shoes and walking/ski poles wld be a useful thing to have. I had none and slipped a couple of times. Also be careful of toboggans hurtling past v fast in places. It is approx 2.5 miles from Kleine Scheidegg to the station at Allmend and took a little under an hour to walk.

We took the train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen, then took a gondola up the mountain to hike to Klein Scheidegg and Eigergletscher. From there we took the gondola down. It was picturesque and stunning. The trail was easy and there were restaurants and shops in Klein Scheidegg.

Fantastic area with the little trains coming up from Grindelwald and Wengen; plus the top notch and very famous hotel where Victorian tourists used to watch climbers on the Eiger; couple of cafes and a shop,
Fabulous up close and personal views all around of The Eiger and Monch and Jungfraujoch.
If we visit again, I would stay hereβ¦must be amazing at sunset and when the crowds have gone.
We walked here from Mannlichen on a good , easy trail, then walked up to Eigergletscher and got that cable car down.Very glad we were on this side of the mountains as Murren/Wengen side wasnβt so much to my taste.
We were so impressed with KS we headed up again on our leaving day , on a brilliant morning as the sun was coming up..well worth it for good light for photos.

We were delighted by the views of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. There are plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops and short walks to keep it interesting. Donβt bother with the overpriced rubbish trip up to Jungfraujoc top of Europe, total waste of time and money.

There is a beautiful paved trail that starts at the train station in Kleine Scheidegg and ends in Wengen. It's an easy detour when descending from the Jungfraujoch, as you can catch the train again at the next 3 stations. For the first 10 minutes, you walk parallel to Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau and the views are just incredible. It's 30 minutes to the Wengernalp train station.

A nice walk up from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg was completely spoilt by the continuous thunderous roar of processions of sightseeing helicopters coming up the valley.
It's totally ridiculous. This is a Unesco World Heritage site so why are these helicopters allowed in such numbers? They were passing us at two minute intervals all day. Heaven knows how much fuel they used or what their carbon footprint is.
Please return this beautiful place to the peaceful idyll it used to be.

Hola from Switzerland, you may rent your skis and Equipment in Interlaken (ochsnersport.ch). Shure you can rent as well in Wengen or Grindelwald, but it wil be more expensive. Best Regards

We will be in the Kleine Scheidegg area the nights of October 9-11, 2017. We know we want to do the Wengen to Grindelwald Grund hike as well as second hike in the area. Two questions: recommendations for another hike of about 15-20 km. And would you recommend Lauterbrunnen or another town as a play to stay? Many thanks!

no, I wouldn't recommend Lauterbrunnen in October, it's a shaded valley with very limited options for evening.
You say 'the hike' from Wengen to Grindelwald Grund - which one would this be, there are numerous options?
Try jungfrau.ch and look at hiking, it gives just so many options to choose from.

We will be in Interlarken on October 6 & 7, 2017. We would like to do a high altitude trip from there. There appears to be two options: Kleine Scheidgg or the Schilthorn. My questions are: Does one have better views than the other? Is it easier to get one rather than the other from Interlaken? Is one less expensive to travel to than the other? As we are 68 & 70 are there any discounts for βseniorsβ. Any recommendations would be helpful.
Written 4 September 2017
The Schilthorn is great with fantastic views, but it's a one stop shop. Kleine Scheidegg has more to offer as there's places to eat, drink and the views to the east over Grindelwald and the Wetterhorn are stunning. A short walk (5mins) will take you to Fallbodensee with great reflected views of the aforementioned or in the other direction towards Lauterbrunnen. You also have the imposing Eiger North Face nice and close up. The other main plus that Kleine Scheidegg gives is getting on the train to go further up to Jungfraujoch which, if the cloudbase is high (or very low so you're above the clouds), is not to be missed. I recommend checking the webcam before going, it's updated every 10 minutes: panoramic.skiline.cc/jungfraujoch?cu=en-GB you can select the Lauberhorn webcam which looks down on Kleine Scheidegg too.

Hi, I am planning to travel to this place in July'17 with my 22 months old daughter. Will this place be okay for her (altitude, weather)? Will there be snow?
Written 4 May 2017
Hi there may not be snow there in July but your daughter will be ok. You can always email the tourist information office in Interlaken if you have any concerns. Hope this helps.

We are booked in Wilderswil in Feb 2017, with the visitors card, can we travel by bus/train to Grindelwald and/or Lauterbrunnen, or do we have to pay from a certain point. Can we travel with the ski-bus or do we need a ski-pass if we want to go do some sledging in Grindelwald / Kleine Scheidegg.

Can you hike from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg in Winter (Feb 2017)
Written 18 October 2016
I found more info for you: google Wengernalp Railway it provides all the stops - between Wengen and Kleine Sheideigg as well as run frequency and more. This should help. Good news is- you could walk from Wengen to Allmend- short walk, and Allmend is a railway stop- there you will be able to find out if you can go further or take the train up or even a lift! Next stop is quite a bit up hill to Wengernalp before you get to Kleine Sch.
Remember you asked to to hike from Wengen to Kleine Sch., that's all UP HILL. Enjoy!

Do they still do the dog sledding at Jungfraujock? We did this several years ago and I can't find an answer for this, since I have friends going and they would like to do this?
Thank you,
Ellen

Hello Ellen
Thank you for contacting us!
We do not offer the dog sledding at Jungfraujoch anymore - its operation was stopped at the end of 2009.
Instead we can recommend a short hike to the MΓΆnchsjoch Hut (45 min. one way), or spending some time in the snow fun park (flying fox, skiing / snowboarding and a sledging park).
Do not hesitate to contact us, if you have any further questions!
Kind regards

We want to go on the railway that runs under the Eiger. We can fly to Bern and either do an overnight bus tour staying one night nearby, or we could catch the train ourselves, book our own accommodation for one night and return by train.
I prefer train over bus on steep mountain roads. I'm not good with steep drops off mountains being a concern (silly concern or not).
Is it as easy as just jumping on the train from Bern to Eiger (3+ hours), book a hotel and then book the train that runs under the mountain?
I've checked weather and it seems we could manage with a good jacket in mid-September, just observing and not climbing anything.

Hi Kelies2016
Yes it is quite easy. You can also fly to Zurich Airport. It takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to Bern. From Bern you take the train to Interlaken Ost. From Interlaken Ost you take the train to Grindelwald and there you go up by train to Kleine Scheidegg where you will be very close to the Eiger. From Bern to Kleine Scheidegg it takes around 2 hours 15 minutes. There are a few rooms at Kleine Scheidegg and a lot of hotels in Grindelwald. The train ticket you can buy at every train station in Switzerland or online (jungfrau.ch).
If you need any further information please contact us.
Kind regards,
you jungfrau.ch team
