About
This jaw-dropping metal walkway is suspended from the mountainside at the top of Grindelwald First, a feat of Swiss engineering. Admire the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys below along First Cliff Walk, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes to finish. For the best chance of clear days and far-reaching views, you can check the real-time weather online via webcam before visiting. To get there, you'll have to take a 25-minute gondola ride from Grindelwald and then another 5-minute walk to the cliff walk. While you're there, you can also hike to Lake Bachalpsee, and then descend the mountain by zipline or mountain cart. – Tripadvisor

- retiredhahaNew Jersey2,056 contributionsNice day tripWe walked from Hotel Caprice to the gondola station, which took approximately 12 minutes by foot. We purchased the ticket at the automated kiosk, then hopped on gondola for the 25 minute ride to the cliff. The wait time at the cliff was bearable; thirty minutes then you tried to expedite the photo session with your love ones.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2023
- Departure141055738134 contributionsUnique experienceMyself, my partner and our 18 month old had a great time on the cliff walk. It was very safe and our daughter was able to walk freely along the metal path without us feeling worried. It was also plenty big enough for us to push our stroller along too. You do have to be patient with people taking a considerable amount of time taking multiple photos so can take about 30 mins to get across. The views were breathtaking along the walk, however we skipped walking out to the very end as there was a very long and slow moving queue which didn’t seem worth it.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 27 September 2023
- Arthur MHamilton, Canada1,621 contributionsTrust Swiss engineering! Long lineups for a picture at the viewpoint, but all worth it!When I went to climb up Grindelwald First, there were massive lineups to get up, and especially at the end of the cliff walk, but the views from the cliffwalk were spectacular. Having a pose at the viewpoint was all worth it! As for the cliffwalk, it gets too narrow at times, but I felt safe throughout the walk. After all it's Swiss-made. And we know how punctual Swiss are, and that translates to their crafts and engineering works.Thank you for your kind feedback! We're thrilled to hear about your amazing visit of First Cliff Walk. - kelltut26 contributionsBeautiful views of the Alps, skip the activitiesThe views are absolutely stunning but the crowds can be a challenge on a clear day. It’s quite nice to take the gondola up and walk around the breathtaking cliff walk. There are nice trails for hiking and then return for a snack or drink on the beautiful deck overlooking the Alps. Be careful when booking any activities as the long wait times make it nearly impossible to do them. We saw wait times from 90 min to 3 hours for the activities. Best just to enjoy the views and relax!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 June 2024

We arrived at the point at 9:30 a.m. We experienced a 30 minute wait for individual photos. But enjoyed the 360* view while we waited. We reserved mountain carts in anticipation of a large crowd. Glad we did as they were sold out before 11amVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 June 2024

Once you take the 25minute Gondola up to the first cliff walk, the walk is free to do. It’s an excellent way of seeing the Eiger and surrounding mountains. Even though it was overcast, the view was still incredible

Good place to go and see the Eiger and surrounding Alps. Walkway is built into the side of the rock and in some parts even moving when you walk. Simply amazing experience. Not recommend if you have a heights fear.

Entrance to this spectacular walkway are included in the price of a ride up to Grindelwald First.
The walkway first hugs the mountainside before the platform extends high across the valley floor.
The views are simply incredible. This is a must do for visitors to Grindelwald First - the walkway is near the cable car stop and a great way to start a day in the mountains.

The Cliff Walk is one of the first things you can do as soon as you get off the cable car up at First. It's a thrilling walk on a metal walkway anchored to the side of a cliff. There are spectacular views around.
There will be a queue right at the end where most people want to take a picture at the tip of the walkway.

I have to say First Cliff Walk is possibly the best attraction on the First Mountain.
This 300m metal walkway is hanging along the First cliff, where at some parts you'd have to lower your head to avoid the rocks to walk past. Despite the foggy weather which made us unable to see much underneath or the mountains around us, the walk experience was amazing. The day we visited was on a quiet morning in early May, we were lucky that there weren't many tourists so we could just stroll up and down the walkway as many times as we like. (We spent about half an hour on the walkway to take pictures, which usually would only took 10-15 minutes to finish the walk.)
We didn't even need to queue to the elevated viewing platform which was just truly amazing. (As I've seen some pictures of the long queue during the summer!) Despite the fact that we couldn't see anything as it was all white and fog out there we still had an incredible time! Highly Recommended!

Take the gondola from Grindelwald-First station, to reach First.
It's a short 10 - 15 mins walk from First gondola station.
The Cliff Walk was nice, though a little scary at first. The view was very beautiful.
The walk way feels very safe and sturdy despite us carrying the sled and a few other tourists walking by us.

It was a foggy day at the top of the Jungfraujoch, so decided to take in Grindelwald and the First Walk. It was a thrilling walk and the views were spectacular. The only bad experience occurred at the end, where everyone is trying to take pictures at the extended viewing platform. A number of people were inconsiderate and spent way to much time. There should be a guide there to ensure people move along. We had to wait almost an hour to get our turn. It should only take a few minutes to take a couple of pictures and move along. It appeared a few groups spent at least 15 to 20 minutes to take pictures, Then fix their hair, did not like the pictures they took and then took some more. Very inconsiderate to the people waiting behind.

Hi. I am staying in Zurich in October. Do you suggest I take a tour to Grindelwald to do the First Cliff Walk or can I do it on my own? Where do I buy the tickets if I go on my own?
Thanks for any advise.

What kind of shies is appropriate to wear on this walk? I will be there early May. Is street platform sneakers appropriate?
Written 18 April 2023
I am not sure what street platform sneakers are but the walk is flat and level and you should have no problem with nearly any type of footwear.

hello, my husband and i are planning to visit Grindlwald around the 12th of april, will the cliff walk be open ?? and is it a good idea to visit that area during this time in april ?
would we enjoy Wengen, Jungfraujoch and lauterbrunnen or the weather would be sketchy ? Thank you !!

I really don’t know how the hiking conditions are at that time of year. It depends on how rapidly the snow melts and how muddy the ground will be.

Good day.We are visiting Switzerland in April last week this year and wanted to visit First cliff walk. I want to know if this is included in the Top of Europe pass? or do you have to buy a separate ticket to get to this cliff walk?Cheers
