    Beautiful bridge
Wooden bridge diagonally over the river Reuss. The chapel bridge has some beautiful paintings dating back to 17th century. Some were damaged in the fire of 1993. It has the water tower in the centre. Lots of stunning views from different parts of the bridge. Many tourists but did become less busy in the evening. Beautiful fresh flowers line the bridge. Many places nearby to eat and relax

    Amazing old wooden bridge
Amazing old wooden bridge crossing the river. You can see where the old bridge - saved from the fire, ends & the new structure starts. Make sure you look up as there are many great frescos on the roof struts depicting historic scenes. The flowers along the outside of each side were beautiful.

    One of the Lucerne Highlights
Aside from the Dying Lion Monument, this is the must see of the visit to Lucerne. Some parts are affected by a fire incident. Otherwise adjustments had already been made. Nice to see art works at the ceiling while crossing it , not just going over it.

    Iconic views
The Chapel Bridge in Lucerne is an iconic landmark. The combination of the wooden bridge, the Water Tower & the picturesque backdrop of Lake Lucerne & the mountains creates a truly magical & picturesque setting. The historic significance of the bridge, which dates back to the 14th century, adds to its charm. Walking across the bridge allows you to take in the beautiful views & appreciate the intricate paintings on the interior.

Saw the beauty of a bridge
The beautiful chapel bridge or “Kapellbrucke” still providing pedestrians the ease of crossing the Reuss river in Lucerne is a fascinating piece of engineering. The foot bridge with its hood or canopy running the entire length had beautiful paintings on triangular boards incorporated to the roof structure that depicted events that took place in ancient past in this city. It was unfortunate to hear that only a few dozen of the originals have been able to be restored after the fire that has occurred a few decades ago destroying many of them. We were glad that we had the opportunity to visit this oldest surviving wooden truss bridge in the world and admire its paintings. It was like walking along a corridor of a museum enjoying the paintings, architecture, live floral décor all along the sides of the bridge and the river scene.

    Stunningly beautiful landmark of Luzern
This beautiful landmark of Luzern is the top photo subject for anyone coming to Luzern. The timber bridge had a fire in 1993 & only the two bridgeheads and the water tower were saved. Nevertheless this still looks like it is more than 600 years old. some original paintings were saved & being displayed as we walked along the bridge. Other parts of the bridge were rebuilt. It is highly recommended to come here both during the day & night to enjoy the different day & night views which are all stunning.

    An amazing structure - a must-see!
Definitely a must-see sightseeing in the beautiful Lucerne’s Old Town. Walking along that bridge brings you to the old ages. You can picture people walking on that bridge decades ago. Some of the paintings have survived the fire. It is really impressive that a wooden structure like that could survive for so long.

Wooden bridge above this is even better!!
The Chapel Bridge has received a lot of publicity and it is very interesting. The paintings on the rafters are limited, most removed or burned. HOWEVER, the "other " wooden Bridge about a 2 minute walk further downstream, has many more paintings...and I found them even more interesting with the symbolic skeletons.

"A bridge too near!"..... and beautiful!
Its a historic bridge, may be the oldest wooden bridge of Europe..A beautiful old covered bridge is well-maintained, picture-perfect, with flowers on both sides from beginning to end. It’s one way to cross Lake Lucerne from one side of the city to the other and is a lovely location for picture taking. A major landmark of the city of Lucern. Visiting it is a must!

Be sure to cross Lucerne’s famous pedestrian bridge Chapel Bridge
Be sure to cross Lucerne’s famous pedestrian bridge Chapel Bridge (Kappelbrücke), a 669-foot wooden footbridge and over the Reuss River with a stone Water Tower dating back to the 12th-century. It is the oldest covered wooden bridge in the world and the most photographed monument in Switzerland. It is decorated with flowers and interesting paintings inside that narrate the history of Lucerne and Switzerland. The gaveled roof is modern construction after the fire in 1993. With a great view of Chapel Bridge, it is fun to enjoy cheese fondue at one of the charming waterfront restaurants along the river. Fondue is a melted Swiss cheese dish served in a pot over a heated lamp and eaten by dipping bread into it. While in Lucerne you should also try Rosti, a typical Swiss dish for lunch or dinner made from grated potatoes that are fried crispy and golden brown and can be served with bacon, cheese, or eggs.

I can write volumes about Luzern or Lucerne which is in the German part of Switzerland for 2 reasons: 1)Its undoubtably the most beautiful city in Switzerland & 2) is because I live in the outskirts of LUZERN. The Chapel Bridge or the Kapellbrücke is one of the most fascinating bridges compared to most bridges in Luzern. Built in 1333 it was nearly destroyed due to a fire in 1993. Don’t miss the fabulous paintings cascading the bridge. Although many were destroyed in a fire a lot of them were saved and restored. Buying a book to read about the history of LUZERN, the Chapel bridge, Wasserturm etc dips one into a whole new historic perspective about the city. I simply love Luzern and I am sure you will too! Enjoy your walk on the Chapel bridge!

I visited the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbruecke) in December 2019 during a day trip to Lucerne. The last time I had been to Lucerne was in 1987 so it brought back memories. During the early 1990's, the bridge was damaged by a fire. Despite that, I still found the bridge to be a great place to visit. I enjoyed looking at all the paintings and artifacts, as well as the water tower. The bridge is a great photo opportunity. The Chapel Bridge is about a ten minute walk from the train station and since I arrived early it was not that crowded. Later in the day it was very crowded with tourists.

The Kapellbrücke (literally, Chapel Bridge) is a covered wooden footbridge spanning the river Reuss diagonally in the city of Lucerne in central Switzerland. Named after the nearby St. Peter's Chapel, the bridge is unique in containing a number of interior paintings dating back to the 17th century, although many of them were destroyed along with a larger part of the centuries-old bridge in a 1993 fire. Subsequently restored, the Kapellbrücke is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe,as well as the world's oldest surviving truss bridge It serves as the city's symbol and as one of Switzerland's main tourist attractions

This bridge really does give you a sense of history as you cross from the new side of the city to the old side.

Built originally in the 1300s and burnt down and rebuilt since, it is still spectacular. If you understand Swiss German you can read text and see paintings of old Swiss historical incidents along the bridge.

Great spot for a photo opportunity.

A must do if you visit Lucerne. Small amounts of construction being done on the bridge where it met the shoreline while we were there, but still accessible at all times of the day or night. Restaurants and a small farmers market lined the shoreline on either side by day & it was peaceful & quite by night.

Jun 19: first up once we reached Lucerne. The Chapel bridge is a wooden bridge across the lake lucerne lined up with flowers and and a stone tower at one end. Most of the bridge was destroyed in a fire and has been rebuit. The bridge has paintings which one can look at while crossing the bridge. It is time spent well and a good place for good looking photos.

History and art depicted in the paintings on this bridge’s ceiling. Even the part that was burned is certainly part of history. Crossing the bridge is a must. I enjoyed seeing the painting, as I marvel at the wooden bridge and see the buildings and their reflection on the water. The blooming flowers by the side of the bridge are also lovely to see.

It is so unusual to see such an old wooden bridge in the centre of a major city. It is beautiful. What is odd is that the bridge does not go directly across the river but an angle, making the bridge about twice as long as it needs to be.

Flower-bedecked wooden bridge. Need I say more?

Ok, I will. This is probably the main tourist attraction in the lovely city of Lucerne. It's a covered bridge running diagonally across the river. Partly destroyed by fire some years ago, the newer parts match beautifully with the old. The highlights are the paintings (stories, essentially) set under the roof all the way along the bridge. It's a busy place so not always easy to stop and admire all of the artworks but I'd recommend you look at a few, at least.

Recommended tourist venue.

Beautifully preserved old wooden bridge across the river mouth into the lake. Although some older paintings had been destroyed by fire some time ago, the remaining paintings tell a story of the region's past. Nicely lit at night.
