Built between 1903 and 1910 by Genevan architect Marc Camoletti, with the aim of regrouping under one roof a number of dispersed public collections, the Musée d'art et d'histoire is one of Switzerland's most important encyclopaedic museums. Boasting over half a million objects including a number of major works and unique series that have made it an institution of international stature, the museum maintains a permanent exhibition of a selection of itsapplied arts, fine arts and archaeology collections. Regional archaeological discoveries, Egyptian and Classical antiquities, artworks, furniture, arms, musical instruments, paintings and sculptures all bear witness to 15,000 years of history. A renovation and enlargement project is currently underway and constitutes one of the major challenges facing the Museum over the coming years.

We explored this museum on a Saturday and it was not crowded at all. One of the floors is currently closed but the rest of the museum was very interesting. I would give it about three hours to explore adequately.

Most of the museum is free except for 1 exhibit. The free section takes 2-3 hours to explore. The only reason I didn't give 4 dots is the lack of signs in English, but for a free museum in Switzerland I feel sort of bad for holding that against them. I did see signs inside the museum for audio guides,... More

I focussed on the fine art; the museum has one floor devoted to this, and the paintings are very strong. There are excellent examples of Swiss masters (eg Topffer and Hodler) but if you are hoping to find some of the European stars, then there are very good examples of Goya, Morisot, Renoir, Braque, Vlaminck... There are also rooms of... More

A relatively small but worthwhile museum. The Egyptian and ancient Greek collections are particularly impressive. There is also a small but lovely collection of impressionist works. The building itself is one of Geneva's most beautiful. Don't miss the charming courtyard cafe!

A wonderful museum offering free admission for the permanent collection. The art collection is touted as the finest in Geneva. While I have not visited many other art museums I must say it is impressive. A collection of "styles" this implies what it means. For those looking for the most notable pieces most are familiar with some could be disappointed.... More

This is a beautiful building with many sections spanning throughout history, my personal favourites included the Egyptian floor, and the courtyard outside, which houses the (slightly overpriced) cafe and many old tablets and pillars. Sadly most displays were only in french so I didn't aways understand, but I could still appreciate the museum :)

Visited this primary museum of Geneva. it is located in a beautiful old building and looks impressive from outside. The content is disappointing! There was only one small room of impressionist paintings (for example), with two Cezanne, one Monet and two Van Gogh. Modern period was pathetic too, with two Picasso paintings from mid 60"s. This is the first major... More

This is a nice place to visit on a weekend. The museum has a complete floor dedicated to art and sculptures. Moreover, other floors contains antiquities and artifacts from different civilizations and time periods. There's also a cafeteria and an open-air seatings. If you are coming by a car, the nearest place to park is Saint-Antoine parking, where the elevator... More
