Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Medieval gate to the city which is well preserved.

I especially like at actual gate that could have been lowered during the time it was functioning.

The Old Town is lovely to stroll around... Saturday Market was good... Plenty of places to eat. The busking singer at the town Hall was amazing. We enjoyed sitting in a bar overlooking the river. Trams are so easy, regular and ar no cost with the Travel card from hotels as is the No.50 airport bus... The zoo is amazing too.. we spent 4.5 hours there..

This is the third and biggest of the three remaining Basel City Gates. Like the other two, this one is very well preserved. With its gates, portcullis and cobbled street all i tact.

One of the old gates of the old city. Very well preserved and beautifully restored. Unfortunately, you can't visit the inside part or to climb it to the top, so all you can do is walk around it for a few pictures.

The Gate of Spalen, or Spalentor, is one of the three remaining city gates of the ancient city walls of Basel. It is regarded as one of the most well-preserved and impressive gates in Switzerland. Unfortunately this is the only city gate that we visited while in Basel. Very impressive.

Regarded as one of the most beautiful extant gates in Switzerland, it originates from around 1400. An impressive longevity.

It looks delightful on both facades, looking towards and away from the city.

It was one of three that survived the demolition of the city walls in 1859 to facilitate expansion of the thriving city.

A rectangular central tower has a round tower on either side. Walking through it is to see some of the formidable defensive aspects as well as other historical artefacts.

There are three city gates still remaining in Basel from the city fortifications dating from 1400 and this is the most impressive.

These gates are located about an 8 minute walk from the Marktplatz in the old city.

The Spalentor is one of three medieval gates built to protect the city of Basel along with the fortification walls.
The gate is little bit out of the tourist sights and requires some 15 min walking uphill.
However, I found it worth it to pass through it and then descend down to the old town.
