Today we were spontaneously at an off-peak time (3.30pm) at the Trois Rois and asked for a table on the terrace for two. We were informed that there was currently no space available, but we would like to sit inside and have a drink, we would then get on a waiting list. Said, done. When the tickets were brought to us, we stressed that we would order the food outside later and now only one drink at first. The waiter's answer was that this was no problem, we were on the waiting list. A look at the terrace told us that so many tables were empty that this would not take too long. But it took a long time before we could order a drink. The order was delivered incorrectly, which can happen. When we were finally able to claim this (nobody came again), the waiter asked us if we had already tasted the drinks (gin and tonic). We denied this and in fun I said he could still drink it. The answer so irritated us that we could not react at all. He seriously said that he could serve them to other guests who were already waiting. This must not happen! In such a house an unding! After some time the receptionist came to tell us that there was now a table for us for half an hour. When asked if this was serious, she said very definitely that it was of course serious, she also had house guests who would come and she certainly could not send others away because of us. We replied that she should have said this from the beginning, we would certainly not have stayed. She ignored that and said we could eat inside. She left and we ordered the bill. Even before the bill came, she came again to tell us without shame that she now had a table for 1.5 hours.
We felt a little tricked and refused.
Like another dissatisfied reviewer, we were dressed casually in summer, both with long pants, white shirt and blouse, Birkenstocks. Is this a criterion? It's obvious, since I was royally served in 2019, smartly dressed and not during the holiday season. A year ago, dressed a little more casually, the treatment was already different. If this really is the case, it must be told! But so you still quickly take 65 francs for 2 drinks and some water. The fact that we didn't tip didn't prompt the waiter to ask if something was wrong.
We like to go to upscale houses because we appreciate the dignified atmosphere. The Trois Rois we will no longer visit and also not recommend!

Being an Israeli-born American citizen, I was eager to visit the famous balcony imbued with historical significance. This spot holds a piece of history where one of Israel's founders stood, making a resolute promise that our nation would come to fruition if we so desired. This snapshot of history is deeply meaningful to me.
Upon arriving at the bar balcony, I encountered a tall individual named Thomas who unfortunately did not extend a warm welcome. He informed me that the balcony was already full and I couldn't even step out to catch a glimpse. This left me disheartened, as it seemed Thomas held a prejudice against me due to my Jewish identity. It was evident he harbored an immediate dislike.
Undeterred, my companions and I returned the next morning, met by a respectful and courteous individual, though I regrettably can't recall his name. He happened to be of Indian descent. I implore you to address the issue of staff attitude towards Jewish visitors. My encounter with Thomas, a staff member who presumed a level of superiority due to his affiliation with a top-tier hotel, was quite hurtful. It's important to remember that possessing a job at a high-class establishment doesn't grant one the same level of elegance and grace.

Your review on Tripadvisor leaves me speechless.
Our bar is one of Basel's most popular and busiest bars and is often fully booked. Our terrace is a hotspot, especially during the summer season, because of the fabulous view of the River Rhine. The seating capacity is limited, and subsequently, there are moments when we have to restrict access for the comfort of our patrons. Our bar manager has been with us since the reopening in 2006 and does an excellent job. As the General Manager, it is hurtful to read comments like yours about my team members, and I must say that I will defend the integrity of their reputation. Thomas needs to ensure the comfort of our guests who want quality time. So, if the bar terrace is too busy, then it is our right to limit the number of people who want to have a look. I'm sure that you'll understand that. I also hope you will realise that I consider it a grave accusation of treating anyone of us as antisemitic. I can and will not accept such an accusation from you, even if you feel offended that you weren't allowed to the terrace on a busy day. It would help if you think twice before writing such an awful thing.

Never book afternoon tea time, it's a total rip-off! You get nothing for your money. Lovely ambience, but unfortunately without any real class. The customer is king, they don't need anything more. It's more of a "cheap is good" mentality. Very weak for such a traditional establishment!!!

Very bad experience!!! Full on discrimination and humiliating service as my mother and I (both of colour) were refused twice that same evening, access to the terrasse for a drink, mentioned as overbooked from the bar male employee. Only the inner bar space was available for us. My father (white) tried again alone, obtaining directly a table in the terrace for the three of us, from another employee. The space outside was not even half full and quiet as ever!!! Last August 2023...Being my 50th birthday then , I choose to report this horrific and unacceptable experience from a "palace" only now, not to spoil my special moment that night (thankfully amazing with an Italian diner next door just before).

Great Abruzzese bartender whose name I will never forget as the gentleman next to me kept shouting it to get half-glasses of wine refilled. Piano player was wonderful, drinks and service immaculate. Will most certainly return when in Basel again and highly recommend. Comfortable for people traveling alone as well.

We started off sitting inside because there were no tables on the terrace. However, they quickly moved us outside. We had drinks and a cheese board. The prices were sinful, but we were on vacation and it was just gorgeous.

We stumbled upon this bar area when stopping in to peruse Les Trois Rois and sneak a peek at the 3-Michelin star Cheval Blanc. They had a cart of desserts on display that caught our attention right away as a gentleman serenaded us softly with classical piano music. The waiter agreed to "reserve" two beautiful macarons for us as we planned to return for dessert after dinner. We were blown away by the presentation and amazing flavors of the rose, raspberry, lychee macarons! The atmosphere is classic and romantic with views of the the famous Rhine river. If you want to have a fine dining experience without the opportunity or the means to afford a full dining experience in the restaurant, I highly recommend visiting the bar lounge for a memorable and enchanting experience.

Genteel extremely elegant bar perfect for a nightcap in Basel. They do have plenty of Louis X111 and Hennessy ‘Richard’ to stare at whilst having your beer and a fine chat with the bartender !
