The stunning rose window above the entrance of this 12th century duomo is surrounded by the symbols of the evangelists; eagle of St. Giovani, bull of St. Luca, lion of St. Marco, and angel of St. Matteo. The high alter is actually a Roman sarcophagus. The wooden carving of Christ was made during the 14th century and is a marvel of Umbrian art of the time.

The current Gothic-style Cathedral stands on the site of a previous Romanesque building prior to the year 1000.The building is flanked by a robust medieval bell tower.
Is a medieval cathedral, good to see it.

Although the Cathedral is still bring renovated and still deemed unsafe to allow visitors, you can still get very good views of the interior from two open doors. Situated next to the Ducal Palace, and just along from Ranghiasci Park, this quiet area of Gubbio is well worth a visit, both for the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning views.
Although this area is on the high level of town, it is worth knowing that you can ease the climb considerably by using the town's public lifts. The first takes you up to Piazza Grande where, on arrival, turn right up the street and the next lift is on your left, and takes you up to the Cathedral Gardens.
Also worth knowing on a hot day is that just below the Ducal Palace there is a charming terrace with a very good snack bar. As well as being a useful resting point, the terrace gives great views of the Piazza Grande and the town below.

This is not a review but may be be useful to know if you are planning to visit the Cathedral. We visited Gubbio today (20 May) to find it closed for preservation work on the frescoes. You can see the inside from two open doors but cannot enter. No indication on how long it will be closed so may be worth checking if you plan to visit.

A beautiful church to visit. There is a life size statue featuring St Francis and the wolf to the right if the building. The story is that St Francis on one of his visits to the area met with locals who were error used by a wolf who continually visited the town because he was hungry. St Francis fed the wolf and told him to be friendly to the locals, calling him , brother wolf.

The stark interior of the Doumo is home to some of the finest and best displayed C17th religious paintings by Umbrian artists. Take the free public elevator and visit a cathedral where you can enjoy the space without cost or crowds.

We had never heard of Gubbio and assumed it was just another Italian hill-top town - charming but not particularly distinctive. It was early morning, so the crowded car parks sparked our interest. Through the main gate, the first square was full of flags and banners, but no people. We wandered on and up through narrow streets. Suddenly there was a huge open square and the Palazzio Ducale, with views over the lower town and countryside beyond. But where were the people?
We wandered further on and up making for a quite austere looking church. As we got closer, it grew into a cathedral. Finally we found the people, the cathedral was packed. It was the anniversary of the towns patron saint.
It's a stunning cathedral, contained within such a small but beautiful town. Go there, your diversion will be well rewarded.

Visited this cathedral on an overcast day. The dramatic up lighting gives a nice effect but it is simply too dark inside to appreciate any of the architectural or decorative details.

It's obviously something to go and visit but it leaves you with a feeling that it is overestimated. The art work is not impressive and the decor far from memorable.

A very simple but beautiful old church. Free entry and worth hiking up to visit. We really enjoyed the simplicity of the architecture. Free entry

Why this extraordinary spelling of "cathedral"? Wouldn't it be either "cathedral", or cattedrale?
Written 12 October 2016
You are correct. Cathedral or Cattedrale.
