One of the most beautiful of all basilicas in Italy. The lighting at night makes it even most special.

Beautiful church. Try to avoid the times when the tourist buses are unloading. Because of its prominent position at the end of the town, it is ideally photographed in the early morning or at sunset. Inside, it is a double basilica. The upper basilica has...More

The basilica is lovely but unfortunately not a very spiritual place due to the coach loads of tourists and the constant shushing of the staff. Even to get down to see the tomb of St Francis took 20 minutes queuing and you weren't encouraged to...More

The city of peace, the fantastic frescoe by Giotto, the interesting city, the wonderful dolce (dessert/sweet) made my journey the most memorable ever.

Even if you are not one of faith, there is no way you can't appreciate everything about this place. It's amazing. Even though I am not a religious person myself, you can feel the intense energy when entering and being in there. It's incredible to...More

Free entry and plenty to look at. The downstairs has more attractions to look at than upstairs, but it has a good atmosphere. The place gets busy with travellers, school trips and tourists. Go either first thing or after dinner as it is quieter.
