A beautiful, calming and tranquil place just perfect for a stroll and contemplation. Also physically beautiful with great views.

Be warned this is quite a long way from the city and the city maps underestimate the distance..A stiff climb over a few kilometres. But I did it and I am 70. Very moving site. No refreshments availabe at the hermitages and picnics forbidden.

Being on retreat, I decided to make a pilgrim meditative walk up the 4.5km route to the Hermitage of St Francis, Eremo delle Carceri. The route was easy but the climb can be steep at some points. As there was no time pressure, there were...More

Just a short ride or a nice hike from the center of Assisi the Carceri takes you back in time and place to the time of Francis. It is a must see if you are visiting Assisi.

You feel the presence of Saint Francis and the tranquility of the place as soon as you pass the concession stand (inevitable) at the entrance. The chapel, the woods, the simple altars and benches in the woods evoke the spirit of the time.

St. Francis would be startled to discover how easy it is to reach his peaceful sanctuary high on the mountain at the edge of Assisi, but you can still climb on foot if you are so minded. Still an active monastery, it is full of...More

The Eremo is a very special place just outside of Assisi on Mt. Subasio. The grounds are made for peaceful reflection, meditation and/or prayer and include many stops for the visitor that played a significant role in the life of St. Francis.

Opposite the entrance is a parking place. If you go before or around 10:00 in the morning, it won't be to bussy and without busses. May God bless you. Felix van Hulsen.

I don't remember exactly. I think it was about 5 euros per person for a shared cab.
