We were in a rental car so drove up to the retreat. Along the way are switchbacks and amazing views of the Umbrian countryside. This is said to be a 2.5 km hike up on several trails, which I am sure is beautiful. However, I...More

This sanctuary is relatively easy to get to from Assisi either by car or within reasonable walking distance up the road into the Monte Subasio National Park. As an added bonus there is the Porta Cappucini an ancient gateway to go through. At the entrance...More

Well worth the time and energy to trek to this spot. It was raining when we visited which only added to it's serenity. Very grateful for all the reviews which encouraged the visit. The highlight of our visit to Assisi.

The Eremo is not a tourist spot, but a place for quiet and reflection. Set in the high Umbrian hills above Assisi, the mountain setting provides fine panoramas. Entering through the Santuario, you go down a sharp and claustrophobic stairway To visit the caves. This...More

Go here first before anywhere else in Assisi - its where St Francis walked and meditated. The setting, forest paths, and building are very calming and will put you in the proper frame of mind before the onslaught of tourist shops and larger formal churches...More

We took a taxi there, uphill all the way from town, and walked back down through the deciduous forest. The visit was unforgettable. The place is wonderfully maintained with woodland walks as well as the ancient buildings preserved so tastefully, illustrating monastic life centuries ago....More

My wife and I are not religious but we found Assisi in general and this place in particular a very worthwhile visit. We walked there from the Village, which we recommend if you are in good shape. It's all uphill about 4 kilometers. We returned...More

Walk from Assisi to the Hermitage is around (nearly) two hours, if you do it slowly. This gives you an ample time to reflect. When you reach the area, you will see the medieval building, it is so simple yet so beautiful. Walk towards the...More

Opposite the entrance is a parking place. If you go before or around 10:00 in the morning, it won't be to bussy and without busses. May God bless you. Felix van Hulsen.

I don't remember exactly. I think it was about 5 euros per person for a shared cab.
