We traveled to Assisi to see the tomb of St Francis, perhaps one of our greatest saints. It was full of tourists and young people, who unfortunately didn't understand nor appreciate where they were. I was looking for a contact with the Lord. Then we went down the valley to where St Francis' Porziucola is. It's the tiny chapel where he... More

This Basilica honors Our Blessed Mother and houses the Porziuncola were St. Francis received his calling to follow our Lord Jesus. This Holy site is where an indulgence can be granted in following the prescribed conditions of prayer and works of Mercy. There are relics of St. Francis contained here. A beautiful humble chapel in the lower level is available... More

This is one of the most magnificent churches. A good guide will take you through and highlight all the history that is a part of this church. The central part of the Basilica houses the Porziuncula, the tiny church of St. Francis and the Franciscans. It was where St. Clare declared her intention to be a religious, leaving her wealthy... Saint Mary of the Angles holds the little Porziuncola within it to protect the little church Saint Francesco rebuilt. they are both a must see! There is also a manger scene next to it. St. Francis made the first living manger scene on the way back from Egypt in an attempt to convert the Sultan to put an end to... More

We were very surprised with this Church. It is huge inside (claims to be the 7th largest in the world). And the little church inside is fascinating. Certainly worth a look and the continue on touring other parts of this complex.

This Basilica is at the foot of the city of Assisi. It is famous for the Porziuncola that is a small chapel inside the Basilica. St. Francis was praying in this small chapel when he received his direction to save the church. After St. Francis's death, there were so many pilgrims that came to visit Porzincola that the church built... More

Well worth a visit to see a place of worship so closely associated with St Francis of Assisi. Museum is very good. (The signs to the museum entrance are rather confusing. At least during winter, the only entrance is close the exit to the basilica complex.)

Midnight Mass at Santa Maria Degli Angeli is a memory from my Bucket List. The atmosphere is more like that of a neighborhood church rather than a grand cathedral. The choir, composed of residents and not monks as one might expect, comes to their places in the choir stalls behind the main altar about 11:30 pm. Volunteers, wearing identifying uniform-style...
