We spent around 4-5 hours in Assisi which was just enough time to see most of the main sights in the historic centre, but not all. We could have easily spent longer and there was a lot we missed. In hindsight, an overnight stay would be better, if you have the time.

Obviously the Basilica of St Francis is the main drawcard. Like most tourists we came to Assisi to see this. It is stunning. Other highlights were the Basilica of St Clare, the San Rufino Cathedral, the Piazza del Comune and lunch at Trattoria Da Erminio (near the Cathedral).

Assisi is very walkable and you can walk easily between all of these sights. It is worth noting that St Clare’s and St Francis are at opposite ends of Assisi but it is only about 15 minutes walk between them.

We started at St Clare’s because we used the Mojano carpark, near the St Clares end of town. It was quite reasonable at €12 for the day. Where you start will depend on which carpark you use and there are a number of large carparks outside the city walls.

The streets and lanes of Assisi are charming. Take any path and you will see beautiful old stone buildings, shuttered houses with pots of colourful flowers, towers, churches and archways that are the remnants of the original medieval and Roman city walls. Even with a tight itinerary, it is worth allowing some time to simply wander and soak up the atmosphere. Via San Francesco which runs between the Piazza del Comune and St Francis’ Basilica is a lovely route to take.

There are a couple of tips that are very helpful to know in advance. These are:
* Dress requirements are sometimes enforced inside the Basilica of St Francis - no bare shoulders or midriff, no shorts or short dresses. Take a wrap or scarf just in case. Photos are not allowed either.
* You will need to plan your trip around church opening times. St Clare’s closes between 12 -2 every day, the Cathedral is shut from 1 - 3 but the Basilica of St Francis stays open throughout the day.
* The Rocca Maggiore castle was temporarily closed for restoration work when we were there (May 2022). I couldn’t find any information about when it would re-open.

Overall, we could easily have spent an overnight in Assisi. There was a lot more we could have seen and I was sorry to miss the church of San Damiano, Santa Maria Maggiore and the Erme delle Carceri but we simply didn’t have time in a day trip.

Assis and its historic center if for sure a wonderful place. Beautiful medieval city with very good options of small and nice restaurants. There are also small shops but different from other medieval cities, the level of commercial exploration is too much. Other cities you can feel they really care about the history and culture while here you feel a huge exploration of the religious perspective leading for me to a lack of respect considering "San Francisco" philosophy´s and life choices. Maybe because of my admiration and respect for him, I preferred to ignore this exploitation and focus on positive things this place can offer.

This small medieval town with a castle on top is a charm. Note the old buildings, fountains and churches, but also the galleries and charming stores

This is beautiful, and we were enjoying the history and the beauty. There were some crowds, but not bad. The city is gorgeous, and at the end, you walk into this breathtaking square where St. Francis' Cathedral is. We tried to go in, but were not allowed because we were wearing shorts. Disappointing, but I do understand their requirement. At the same time, it was 90F, so would still wear shorts next time.

A beautiful city with a lot of sights, many angles, more than enough places to stop for a break. Assisi is perfectly organized for the narrow: multi-storey car parks, tunnels into the city for pedestrians, elevators, relatively clean, an absolute must

As you walk along the old, narrow streets and lanes it isn’t difficult to imagine yourself back in the Medieval era. With so many old buildings and fascinating structures that is it a photographers dream.

Best thing about the visit was just seeing it from afar in the approach by car, and then wandering amongst it, getting up high to the castle at the top.

We came for Saint Francis, but were surprised at the charm of the city. Could be that we just didn't do our homework which resulted in the surprise. However, this is a nice place to visit for a feel of a historic town.

This area at Christmas has a life size Nativity scene. Worth the stop as you visit the basilica. Consider that Francis is credited with starting the custom of setting up Nativity creches in the churches in Italy

Assisi historic centre is dominated by the famous Basilica San Giaovani d'Assisi. However, the historic center is more than that. The historical medieval building is well exist and lived by Assisi for centuries and maintain their originality as best as they can.

It is good to walk around the historic center and having lunch at this historic city. People are also very nice and good to foreign tourist as well.
