This is the plaza leading up to the Basilica. It has bathrooms and I think there was a shop or tourist office here. My wife needed a place to rest after walking and along the colonnades was the perfect place for that.

It is no more than a large square that gives access to the basilica. It has a beautiful view of the fields of Assisi

BEAUTIFUL CHURCH AND PIAZZA
Jun. 2019 • Family
This is the top of the complex. It's a church atop another church. There is a steep incline to reach this location. The views of the countryside from this height are awesome. The interior of the church is so typical of the Renaissance era. There was a follower dressed as St Francis. Please dress with respect to the religion as I saw many tourist with bare shoulders and short dresses.

LOWER BASILICA PIAZZA
Mar. 2019 • Couples
Arcades surround this large enclosed area in front of the lower basilica, originally intended to give shelter to pilgrims. The awe inspiring way to enter is via the arch over Via Frate Elia. Upon entering, it reminds you of a cloister

Impressive plaza entrance to the Basilica of St. Francis
May 2019 • Friends
Most people visit Assisi so as to venerate the remains of St. Francis, who is entombed in the Basilica bearing his name. As you walk up hill - Assisi sits on top of a hill - you finally come to this magnificent plaza in front and to the side of the Basilica, at its lowest level. (I recommend you start your visit to the Basilica at this level and not the highest.) You are rewarded by the best view of the entire church and if you look left as you approach the entrance, you will have magnificent views of the valleys below.

Piazza next to the lower church
Apr. 2019 • Couples
This is a long and wide piazza at the entrance to the Basilica Inferiore. It leads to the lower Basilica, the Sacred Convent and the Oratory of San Bernardino da Siena.

The arcades date from 1474. This is where pilgrims took refuge and were able to purchase food and other necessities from the vendors who were housed here. They were partially rebuilt in the sixteenth century, and again after the 1997 earthquake.

Part of Basilica sight

Beautiful medieval square on the way to the Basilica, if you come from the nearest parking. Impressive as the basilica itself and its other surroundings.

Dynamic Piazza
Nov. 2018 • Couples
A very steep, open Piazza with sweeping views of the Basilica. You can find a real life figure living rough like a Medieval Saint may have done, and there are public restrooms off to one side of the square, available for about 0.40 cents per user.

Lovely place to sit and view the scenery.

This is a huge piazza which is guarded by the military. You have access to washrooms and benches to sit in the sun. You must also pick up a listening device before entering the Basilica.

We visited the Francesco tomb with our hired walk tour guide and the churches, quite bit of stair walking was involved, but worth it.
