Sorry, but pales in comparison after visiting the cathedral. Some old fresco's, but not much else. A very large church, but half empty.

This was another of the churches we visited on our tour of Siena - there are many of them. Another of the massive variety - see my picture of the doorway - with a cavernous interior and impressive stained glass. Certainly worth a visit.

The Basilica is located about a 10 minute walk north east of Il Campo down an easy walking slope. You enter into the Piazza in front of the Basilica through a stone archway. There is a small children's playground in the piazza. The Basilica was...More

This is a Basilica not to be missed. In the lower church you will find the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi, in the upper church are frescos depicting the life of Francis.

The neo-Gothic facade of the basilica is the result of the early 20th century remodeling effort although the original church dates to the 13th century. The interior is pretty dark and except for the stained windows the decorations are modest.

We went to this Basilica as part of a bus excursion from Florence. The importance of this church is that it holds the head of one of Italy's patron saints, Saint Catherine of Siena who lived from 1347 to 1388, and worked out of this...More

The church is interesting to vist but is not a must see. There is a good view of siena from the church which made our walk to the church worthwhile.

Tvhe Basilica di San Francesco took awhile to get to but easy by foot. The church is massive inside but dark and a bit eerie. They are doing a massive renovation of the paintings. One of the several alcoves in the front of the church...More
