About
The Renaissance interior of this Basilica is beautiful, but some of its chilling displays of dead religious notables may give you nightmares, including a shrouded skeleton with a wax head and a mummified body.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This splendid Sienese church with an Egyptian cross plan dominates the hill of Valdimontone and is one of the most suggestive churches in the city. It is not central but it is worth walking in fifteen minutes the distance that separates it from Piazza del Campo. Near the building there is a panoramic terrace from which you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the city.

Great stay. Very high quality at very reasonable cost. I stay
here often when visiting family and highly recommend it to any and all. Useful also to have in house pool and gim as well as self use laundry facilities. Great views from lobby which is 11th flor as well as from rooms all of which are above lobby level.

I’d actually rate the hotel as 4.5 stars. Hard for me to give a full 5*. But the front desk staff were great, the hotel was clean and well designed. The rooms work great for the intended purpose. This is a great option in Santa Fe. Really appreciated the laundry facility in the hotel...decent gym as well. It was everything i could have wanted for the purpose of the stay. Only negative was the coffee at breakfast...pretty bad

Many better options around, the room wasn't clean and the reception ladies were rude. They didn't have anyone to clean the room and no option to change the room which is ridiculous...

I was surprised that for quite some time I was the only person in this huge Basilica. The church has huge vaulted ceilings large columns and paintings. The inside dome is pretty as is the altar. The interesting part of this Basilica are the remains of two saints: Francesco Patrizi and Gioacchino Piccolomini. Even without these relics the Basilica is worth a visit. Outside the entrance to the Basilica is a park area with benches where you can have a peaceful picnic lunch and let kids run around.

A hugely impressive building that for some reason was completely empty when we visited. The accoustics are amazing, if you go through the door on the left then when you close it the door catches on the floor and the sound reverbates round the Basilica. Would love to see a choir perform here.

This Basilica, located in the territory of the Contrada Valdimontone, was largely reconstructed in the 15th and 16th centuries in place of an earlier church that had been built in the 13th century. The 15th century Romanesque style facade was never finished leaving the Basilica with a very simple, unadorned facade with a rose window above a single doorway. The Bell Tower was built in the 14th/15th centuries but has been renovated many times the last being in the early 20th century. The front steps were added in 1750. You can gain great views over Siena to the Duomo and back of the Palazzo Pubblico from the top of these steps and from the garden next door (when it is open).
Internally the Basilica is quite cavernous and built in the plan of an Egyptian Cross with three naves (the central nave has transverse arches) with columns separating the naves and 5 arches down each side of the long body of the church. There is a transept with 5 chapels built into the back of the church. The ceilings of the naves and the walls of the church are mostly simply painted white.
The beauty in this Basilica lies in its chapels, with their beautifully painted and decorated ceilings and walls, the statues and some of the masterpieces of artwork that adorn them. The altarpiece is The Coronation of the Virgin by Bernadino Fungai. Unfortunately the 4 panels previously attached to the sides were separated at some stage and sold off separately. There are several other art masterpieces in the adjoining chapels including the Madonna del Bordone which is signed and dated 1261.
This Basilica is worth a visit although it is not on the usual tourist route.

From the outside of this building, there is no clue as to the beauty inside. The facade is almost brutal, with just one small door to the inside. But open the door and the richness of the architecture, decor and artworks is overwhelming. The church goes back to the 13th century - amazing considering the limited resources available to the architects and engineers at the time. The church has many wonderful works of art. It is impossible to describe the aura of the church - it has to be visited
