The fortress is easily accessible from Piazza del Duomo, through Piazza delle Erbe, on the right side of the church. It was the castle of Lombard Astolfo, which later served as a Dominican convent. The Florentines built the castle in 1353 as a protection from...More

The Rocca di Montestaffoli is a short climb from the Piazza del Duomo, crossing the Pazza delle Erbe. But worth the effort. Originally, it was a castle of the Lombard Astolfo, later a Dominican Convent. The fortress was built by the Florentines in the 14th...More

Located a short walk from the Duomo piazza is this extensive ruin. It was a bit of a climb but much of the city was a climb. Through a portal we entered the ruined grounds. There were several viewpoints and a short tower to climb...More

The castle is not really present anymore but the area is very quite as less people end up there. Worth it for a little break

San Gimignano is full of great medeival buildings and luckily also many great view points from where they can be admired. Rocca Montestaffoli is one of these spots. Unlike the towers the view here is free of charge.

The place is nice but not remarkable but the tower is. You can climb the tower for free and get an amazing view of the town and surrounding Tuscany. This is only a short way from the main street.

Great views of the rooftops and medieval towers of San Gimignano - and it's free! Walk into the fortress ruin and find the tower in the corner. It's 20 narrow, steep steps but worth the climb.
