Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Porta San Giovanni is one of the some gates to enter to old town of San Gimignano, in Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. It is located in the opposite side, from where we entered always due to our accomodation. It is a nice town, which you can see from the main large street. Ok.

At the entrance to this gate, you can see a sign “San Gimignano Pass”. The village is surrounded by walls and there are different gates. The advantage of a door is that it is easy to set up a ticket office as this village does for example for the cathedral. It’s a shame that the town hall didn’t think of it because it would have generated additional income on top of the parking taxes for the car park.

We passed this impressive gate to San Gimignano a few times during our stay.
A classical massive entry to the Southern part of the city.

Porta San Giovanni is one of the three main entrances in the walled town of San Gimignano. It is located on the southern section of the town and it opens to Via San Giovanni, one of the main streets of San Gimignano.

Men were the protectors
We walked through both on the main city gates, the San Mateo and the San Giovanni as well. For the first time, a feminist started to be upset in me. Of course, both gates have male names. Why can't one of them be Porta San Barbara, for example? Then I had to see the logic in the title, as the gates were part of the city's defense system, where they could control who could come inside the walls. Of course, this protection was provided by men at that time - and mostly now - so it was entirely fair to name them male saints. I don't know how much San Giovanni was a warrior, but the gate named after him is very pretty. Together with Mura di San Gimignano, with its sturdy menacing tower, must have made a profound impression on the approaching enemy.

This is an old city gate. I was here at night and it really popped with the lights on it. The whole city and street behind it also looked like you transported in time.

Very impressive 13th century city walls in amazing shape. When you walk through this arch, you are entering another world into the past.

Like most visitors, we ended using both the main gates to San Gimignano. We had parked below the Caffe Giardino at the top of the hill and went through this gate to find a hotel which turned out to be at the opposite end of the city. The area around this gate is very medieval, with lots of flags, and you half expect knights to come galloping around the corner like on a movie set.

Like most of the other tourists, we entered the town via the Porta San Giovanni. It's fascinating to think of the generations of people who have passed through this gate since the 1200's and wonder about the reasons for their comings and goings. There is so much history to ponder in this and other Tuscan towns.
