This monument and fountain depicts Cosimo de' Medici, original founder and supporter of the Knights of St. Stephen for which the square takes its name. Even more interesting is the Palazzo Carovano which he commissioned for the knights and is now the Palace of the Normal School. It is quite ornate and provides the perfect backdrop for the monument.

The marble statue of Cosimo de' Medici stands in the middle of the Palazzo della Carovana sweeping staircases in The Knights’ Square (Piazza dei Cavalieri). There is a fountain at his feet with a basin in the form of a shell decorated with two grotesque monsters. He was the first Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St. Stephen, and a great supporter of the arts. His Son Grand Duke Ferdinando commissioned Flemish sculptor Pietro Francavilla, to do both works.

The statue is located at the Piazza dei Cavalieri, designed by Pietro Francavilla at the end of the 16th century. It depicts the Grand Duke standing on a high pedestal, subduing a dolphin, to symbolize his domination at the sea. In front of him is a fountain with a shell-shaped basin decorated by two grotesque monsters.

Since Cosimo I was the founder of the Order of the Knights of St. Stephen and he ordered the redesigning the piazza with a number of buildings for the Order including their headquarters, church and barracks it was only logical to erect a monument to him here, at the Piazza dei Cavalieri.

The statue of Cosimo I de' Medici is located in the middle of Piazza dei Cavalieri in front of the Palazzo della Carovana and was built at the end of the sixteenth century to celebrate him as the first Grand Master of the order of the knights of Santo Stefano. In front of its pedestal there is a beautiful fountain.
