The town itself is like a maze like many medieval Italian towns. It was begun in 1063 by Pope Alexander & has 3 masterpieces. The first church here was from the 6th century. Admission was 10 Euros & had a beautiful ceiling. There is a tomb of Guinigi's wife who died in childbirth. There is also a belltower that you can climb.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 February 2024

The Jacopo de Quercia Illario di Carretto statue is quite lovely in a small chapel on the right hand side of the church. Il Voto Santo is under restoration and now supine in a room visible from a large glass window and accompanied by a video, describing its loving restoration.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2024

The church is on a small plaza..and can be seen from many angles. Strangely all the columns of the façade are different.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 13 May 2024
- RobertCMelbMelbourne, Australia81 contributionsLots to see, excellent museumThe Cathedral exterior is very impressive both when approached from the direction of the station and when viewing the facade. The Cathedral charges for tourist entry to any part of the building, which is unusual for Italy. However, it is well worth paying for the combined ticket that gives entry to the Cathedral, Cathedral museum and Chiesa dei Santi Giovanni e Reparata. The museum is well presented with lots of interesting items. The Cathedral itself is spacious and tasteful, although unfortunately the "Holy Face" was removed for restoration when we were there. The Chiesa dei Santi Giovanni e Reparata includes access to excavations of early churches and other layers underneath the current church, although, despite quite good labelling, it is not easy to distinguish the different layers or make out many of the partial remains.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2024
- doncgd6 contributionsJust go up the tower on a separate ticketThe church is lovely but I may not have gone in if I wasn’t aware the ticket price of 3€ did not include the tower (another 3€). Magnificent views from the top… definitely worth the 200+ steps! Look for the gaps in the mesh for the best pics 😉Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 7 June 2024

I went to this cathedral with my parents to have a look round while we are in the city. A man yelled at me across the church in Italian and I did not understand him. I was very scared and confused as I am only 19 years old and he was a very angry Italian man. After what seemed like an age of him standing at the other end screaming at me, while all the people in the church stared at me, a nice lady visiting with her family came over to explain that he wanted me to put a cover up on to cover my shoulders. This man starts storming toward me and says they give them free at the ticket office. He starts leading me to the ticket office and on the way over I see 7 or 8 women dressed very similarly to me, some in even less clothes, and I point these women out to him and he ignores me. We get to the ticket desk and he throws a cover at me and sneers. I put the cover on and turn around to see him walk straight past a girl in short shorts and a bra, and say nothing. At this point I burst into tears. I am humiliated, confused and angry. I go to see the lady at the ticket office and I explain how unacceptable it was for him to yell across the church at me, she pretends to be sympathetic for a little while, but as I am sobbing and shaking I am attracting attention and people in the queue begin to look at me. She notices people are looking at me and tells me to be quiet and go away. At this point I am livid, but luckily my parents dragged me out. I am a 19 year old girl with a developing body in a forgein country. The country is very hot, so I can’t wear the type of clothes I would usually wear and have to wear shorts and small tops, which I am already self conscious in as I don’t usually wear them. I fully respect needing to cover up in a church, but this was not about covering people up. This was blatant fat phobia and discrimination as my chest is bigger than average. If this issue was truly about the amount of skin I was showing then everyone should have been given a cover, not just me. It was obviously not objective either as both ladies in the ticket desk saw my outfit and neither offered me a cover, letting me walk in easily without, when they should have given me one if they knew it was customary. I paid €9 to enter a cathedral to be shamed and humiliated in front of many people, and ended up crying and shaking uncontrollably afterward. This is not “Christian”. This is not the way that god would want us to live, it’s mysoginistic, rude and entirely unacceptable and unprofessional. Please please, if you are thinking of going here, do not give them your money, there are much nicer churches nearby that will be more respectful. If the owners or managers of the church are reading this, I implore you to take disciplinary actions against your employees

**visited here back in January keep of 2020** Like many cathedrals in Italy this is a great one to visit. Nestled inside the walls of the city of Lucca, it is the biggest cathedral there and it can be appreciated from afar. 3 euros to get in and an extra more to have access to the tower, it is particularly cheap compared to some other ones. Also rich in history, the Cattedrale di San Martino is host to the tomb of Ilaria del Carretto one of the finest sculptures of the 15th century. The sculpture is very detailed it almost seems like is going to jump up at any moment. Visiting this cathedral is a must. Highly recommended. Follow me and my adventures @Sin_Aguayo fb sin Aguayo

The Cathedral of Lucca, dedicated to San Martino, is one of the most interesting and ancient churches in all of Tuscany. Inside there are works of art and religious of considerable importance. It is worth visiting first of all because it houses two symbols of the city: The Holy Face ( Il Volto Santo ), a great "Black" Christ ( Cristo " Nero" ) , one of the most important relics of the Catholic faith, kept in an octagonal chest which is also a work of art and the famous funeral monument for Ilaria del Carretto, by Jacopo Della Quercia. Then there are Tintoretto's Last Supper, Ghirlandaio's paintings ( Madonna with Child and Saints ) and paitings by Fra Bartolomeo, Filippo Lippi, Bronzino and several others. The church has been rebuilt three times. Towards the end of the 12th century, the third and definitive reconstruction began, with the rearrangement of the facade: the works, which continued in alternating phases, ended only in 1637 with the completion of the Chapel of the Sanctuary. Many master builders succeeded one another over the centuries at the helm of the construction site: Antonio Pardini da Pietrasanta (1395-1419) with whom the building assumed the shape it still has today deserves to be mentioned, for the reason that the church is magnificent.

Absolutely beautiful cathedral, the architecture and artwork inside is must see and I also highly recommend that you climb the tower. It provides an incredible view of Lucca and the surrounding hills and mountains.
if you are travelling in August 2021 or maybe even September 2021 you will need to have an up to date green pass with you (we were asked to show this before entering)

Magnificent cathedral (marble is still classy!). Special mentions for the particularly beautiful stained glass windows which let in particularly beautiful light at the end of the afternoon (you'll tell me, that's the goal!). And the richly decorated ceilings (see photo but it's even better in real life). A room has been set up in the transept to show the restoration work of a very large wooden Christ). In short, worth seeing if you pass through Lucca. Please note that there is an entrance fee (€3 per person). There is an additional charge if you want to climb the bell tower.

At first sight the Cathedral of Lucca appears a little unusual compared to the churches that, even in Lucca itself, we are used to admiring. The bell tower, in fact, interrupts the symmetry of the facade and joins it to another building. Even the portico is not often present in religious buildings and, moreover, the third of its three arches is much smaller in size than the first two. Nonetheless, the facade attracts for its beauty thanks to the three orders of columns inlaid with black and white marble. The interior, with three naves, is grandiose and contains important works such as, among others, "The Last Supper" by Tintoretto and the funerary monument to Ilaria del Carretto sculpted by Jacopo della Quercia as well as the famous relic of the "Holy Face" which however is undergoing restoration. By paying a cumulative ticket you can visit, in addition to the Cathedral, also its Museum, the bell tower and the interesting church of Santi Giovanni e Reparata, Lucca Cathedral before the construction of that of San Martino and built on Roman ruins.

Impressive Romanesque cathedral built in the 11th century. The facade is very interesting (especially the stone with the labyrinth). Inside it is also very interesting, and in my opinion the most interesting is the statue of Jesus made of wood - it is said that this is the oldest wooden statue in the whole Western world.

The city is beautiful, people are nice and kind. But today we recieved the ticked for "driving at the area for other vehicles". We were searching for a parking spot (bad signs) and ended up in a one way road which was not really closed. We quickly turned around and left the area immediately. Maybe they need a sign where the tourists can actually park. So they sent us a ticket now, in this time of quarantine when some people don't have money (100€). I am very dissapointed by this regime. I will never be back there.

The Cathedral is very beautiful and inside it preserves some magnificent works of art such as the funerary monument of Ilaria Del Carretto sculpted by Jacopo della Quercia. The bell tower is also worth a visit because you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city. Tickets can be purchased either individually or for both structures. The total cost is 6 euros per person.
