- Herbert C1,787 contributionsLegacy of the Medici familyAs the Roman god of freshwater and the sea, it is little wonder that there is a fountain named after Neptune in several other major Italian cities, Florence included. The tribute is understandable in Florence, as Neptune's dominion over the seas symbolizes the power of Cosimo de' Medici, who is responsible for establishing the Medici family as effective rulers of Florence during much of the Italian Renaissance, thereby alluding to Florence's rule of the seas. Located at the centre of Piazza della Signoria, it is hard to miss this glorious fountain dating back to the 16th century, although it does get over-shadowed, literally and figuratively, by the imposing Palazzo Vecchio and neighbouring replica of the statue of David. This quintessential fountain is not merely the typical must-have at a busy European piazza, but in the case of Florence, it also represents the historic legacy of the Medici family for the city in celebration of its Renaissance Movement.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 February 2024

This is the work of Bartolomeo Ammannati (1560-74) and was recently restored in 2019. What you see is a classical image of Neptune, peering to his left. He stands on carriage pedestal with horses bursting from the fountain basin. Water spouts into the basin from various positions. The basin is then surrounded by mythical beings. It is a beautiful fountain and addition to the monument scene on the square.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 April 2024

It's fascinating that it dates back to the 16th century and the intricacy of the artwork in marble and bronze is incredible. And the water gushing from this fountain was very tempting on the hot day that we came here back in August. It was nice to view this lovely piece of artwork without paying any entrance fees or waiting in line for ever...Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 September 2024

Unfortunately this magnificent fountain had become a magnet for vandals in tbd past, but thanks to the Ferragamo family’s generous donation, the long overdue two year restoration of the fountain was completed in 2019.
The fountain was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici, Duke of Florence from 1537-1569, who was a patron of arts in his native city. It is situated in front of Palazzo Vecchio on Piazs Signoria.

Piazza della Segnoria is a small area you come across when walking through the beautiful streets of Florence. You can't miss the Fountain of Neptune he is absolutely stunning and towers across the piazza. There are several other statues in the square to be admired to as will as a super caffe if you want to stop for a quick drink called Rivoire.

Probably the liveliest place in Piazza Singoria, which rightly attracts the attention of every visitor to Florence. The finely crafted marble and bronze fountain is one of the most important works of Renaissance sculpture.
The main character of the entire sculpture is, of course, Neptune - the Roman god of seas, lakes and springs, who was identified with the Greek Poseidon and took over his mythology.
The fountain was designed by Baccio Bandinelli and after his death was created and completed by his pupil Bartolomeo Ammannati. The fountain from 1565 reaches a height of more than five meters and is incredibly impressive at any time of the day or night, even when the water is not gushing out of it.

The Fountain of Neptune is the sixteenth-century monumental fountain in Piazza della Signoria, built practically close to Palazzo Vecchio. Dominating the scene is the colossal white marble sculpture of the God of the seas Neptune, standing on a horse-drawn chariot, while all around the basin there are bronze sculptures of sea creatures. One of the many works that contribute to the beauty and artistic richness of this square.

Fontana Del Nettuno is a symbol of the power of the Medici Family which was constructed in the second half of the 16th century. It is quite an impressive fountain featuring the god Neptune and a few other symbols of sea and land and influence. It is situated in the Piazza della Signoria, outside the Palazzo Vecchio, another Medici symbol of power. Worth a look.

An impressive fountain of the Roman god Neptune in the Piazza della Signoria. This seems to be Florence’s version of Rome’s Trevi Fountain. Tourists are always throwing coins in it. It was recently restored to its former glory and looks very stunning, especially at night.

...getting to Piazza della Signoria!!...in Florence!!...you are in front of a unique spectacle!!...I saw again this Fountain of Neptune!!...which is located right near the corner of Palazzo Vecchio!!...it is said that this Fountain was the first of its kind in Florence!!...among other things a truly fundamental element for the Piazza!!...it was commissioned by Cosimo I dè Medici!!...to celebrate the arrival of water in the city!!!...in an area that at the time was very scarce!!...and that also suited him!!...since he resided in Palazzo Vecchio!!...and had already lost three children to illness and poor personal hygiene!!...but consequently it was also important for the power of the government!!...it was however the first public fountain in the city!!...and was inaugurated on the occasion of the wedding between Francesco I dè Medici and the Grand Duchess Giovanna d’Austria!!...the Fountain presents itself with a large octagonal basin!!...with many decorative elements in bronze!!...in the center of the basin four horses that can be glimpsed from the waters!!...and then imposing and statuary!!...the Neptune!...in Carrara marble!!...and the face is said to be similar to that of Cosimo I dè Medici!!...there are also many other architectural elements!!...of the wheels with the twelve zodiac signs!!...which have as their meaning the passage of time!!!!...what can I say!...this Fountain of Neptune!!!...in Piazza della Signoria in Florence!...⛲️💯💦!!️
