About
Palazzo della Signoria, better known as Palazzo Vecchio, has been the symbol of the civic power of Florence for over seven centuries. Among the works of art safeguarded in the museum: the Cortile di Michelozzo; Michelangelo’s celebrated Victory in the Salone dei Cinquecento; Donatello’s Judith in the Sala dei Gigli; the private rooms of the Medici court and among these the marvellous Cappella di Eleonora, the chapel with paintings by Agnolo Bronzino.

My review is for the museum. The spacious courtyard is free and open to the public. I went on a Sunday when admission for locals was free and prepaid reservations were not possible. I was glad I got there early because a line had formed behind me by 9:00. There is a WC and lockers to the right of the ticket office. You are required to check your bag.
I am an enthusiastic museum geek but I found the experience to be mediocre. The visit starts in Cosime’s great hall which is filled with frescoes, monumental paintings, and a number of statues including an unfinished Michelangelo. Visitors should linger here a bit because there is a lot to see in this room and the one way route does not bring you back.
Next are the royal apartments. The rooms are sparsely decorated and contain few original furnishings. There are few works of note. Highlights were a Donatello statue and the map room housing a huge globe that looks like it needs a good cleaning.
The visit ends at the mezzanine level containing pieces donated by some wealthy fellow named Loeser. Nothing memorable here.
And that was it for the visit. The whole visit takes barely an hour. Displays are not individually labeled, instead the rooms’ contents are described by stands which were all facing in a direction that forced you to look at the ceiling paintings upside down. How hard is it to get this right?
The museum might be worth visiting if you have a Firenze Pass or if they decide to include tower entry (separate ticket and closed on the day I visited). Otherwise there are better ways to spend €12.50 in Florence.

Very nice museum, a lot of the rooms are simply for decorational purposes, cabinets and wardrobes ETC. But it is worth the visit to see the replica of the Statue of 'Peace'(the story surrounding this statue is quite fascinating), the 'Eleonora Apartments', which include ceiling decor, depicting woman's achievements throughout myth(a personal favourite of mine), and the 'Elemental Apartments'.
I was pleased with my visit, and felt it was worth the €10; not expensive in comparison to other museums in the area. There was no need to book 'Skip the Line' tickets in my case, as I just walked straight in, however, of you wish to see 'The Tower' it is worth making a reservation in advance, as I was not able to see this part myself due to being fully booked.
The cafe was not open at the time of my visit.

We start our visit in the huge Salone dei Cinquecento, where our mouths literally drop in surprise. What a beautiful room with artworks by Michelangelo and Leonardo de Vinci. We are short of time and eyes to discover all the details in the enormous wall and ceiling paintings. Simply beautiful!
The other rooms are also richly decorated, with the wall and ceiling paintings usually devoted to a specific theme. Especially the room with paintings around the natural elements (water, fire, earth and air) is more than worthwhile.

Palazzo Vecchio was itself the actual museum. We first endured the crowds to view the free open-air exhibits outside the medieval structure, which had served as the Florence town hall. Upon paying the museum entry fee, we thankfully were able to leave the frenzied masses outside and leisurely stroll the stunning rooms and marvel at the magnificent works of art. It was impossible not to have been awestruck by the beauty which surrounded us. The wall frescoes were amazing, the ceilings simply gorgeous, and the views of Florence were worth the climb.

From the outside the palace almost looks like a fortress, austere, massive and severe; inside, however, the rooms are the celebration of the dukes of Florence and Tuscany, who also lived here for some years, before moving to Palazzo Pitti. Certainly the main and best known architect of the layout of the palace, according to the tastes and wishes of the Medici, was Vasari, whose imprint can be felt everywhere, and not only in that incredible masterpiece of the Salone dei Cinquecento. But in this same hall and in the elegant and precious rooms of the various neighborhoods (apartments), worthy of a royal palace, other artists besides Vasari also contributed, both in the paintings and frescoes of the walls and ceilings, and in the flooring, in the doors, in furniture, both by carrying out the work directly, and by designing or drawing for other executors, and as authors of statues/paintings to further decorate the rooms; among the many, the names of Michelangelo, Baccio Bandinelli, Andrea del Verrocchio, Alessandro Allori, Giambologna, Francesco Morandini (Poppi), Ammannati, Domenico Poggini, Santi di Tito, G.B.Naldini, Vincenzo de' Rossi, Giovanni Caccini, Santi Buglioni stand out , Bronzino, Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio, Giuliano da Maiano, Botticelli, Baccio d'Agnolo, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Donatello. So get ready for a journey through beauty that will not disappoint you and will not make you regret the ticket, which is not cheap: 12.5 euros which rises to 17.5 if there are impromptu exhibitions in the rooms of the palace (ticket which however does not include the climb to the Arnolfo Tower, subject to a separate ticket). We were lucky because we took advantage of the free day of the civic museums of Florence which falls every year on the anniversary of the death of the last of the Medici: Anna Maria Luisa, the Electress Palatine.

The museum housed in the rooms of Palazzo Vecchio is one of the most particular, in the sense that it is not a real museum but an itinerary to discover its historic internal environments. The visit itinerary is somewhat complex and winds through the different floors of the building. Among the main attractions of the visit is, first and foremost, the immense Salone dei Cinquecento with its enormous wall paintings and highly decorated coffered ceiling. Among the other rooms, the one of the Lilies, the one of the geographical maps and the private chapel stand out but it is the whole palace as a whole that represents a journey through the history of the city. This museum was not among those that impressed me the most but it is still worth a visit.

An excellent tour of the palazzo vecchio in English. Top.
The guided tour is a real plus and allows to better understand the history of the palazzo and to better understand the places. It takes place in small groups of less than 10 people. This is great for us who are passionate about History.
Few people in the museum, compared to the crowds outside.
The explanations were clear and enriching and the Guide was very friendly. We had a very pleasant time.

The artwork commissioned in this palace is stunning. There were so many talented painters trained by the Medici the whole palace is a feast for your senses. You feel like you are walking through history in their footsteps. It’s so impressive eluding the power of this incredible family. You will have neck ache from viewing the incredible ceilings. Beware it’s very hot no air conditioning! Everyone visits the Euffizi galleries in my opinion the is more amazing and minus the shoulder to shoulder slow moving crowds.

Finally we got to see how is Palazzo Vecchio inside! I walked with my mouth open. Each room was more beautiful than the other. The walls, the frescoes, the sculptures, the paintings- everything was just jaw dropping. We spent 1,5 h there. My photos will describe it all best. The cost is only €12,50. The entrance is every half hour and they are very strict about it. I think I’d put Palazzo Vecchio in my top three attractions in Florence after the Duomo and Uffizi.

Palazzo Vecchio (also known as City Hall, Palazzo della Signoria) stands majestically on the Florence skyline and is one of Florence's well-known symbols next to Piazza della Signoria. It was once a prison, the city hall where the Florentine government handled municipal affairs, and the Palazzo Vecchio where the Medici family lived. Built in the Middle Ages, it still retains its austere 14th-century architectural style, including its crenellated top and imposing bell tower. It is beautiful and golden inside, with many sculptures. You can also climb the bell tower to overlook Florence.

Secondo me prova a sentire il museo. Se hanno disponibilità di posto te lo cambiano senza problemi, ma se sono al completo no..

Hi Richard, I'm intrigued by your glowing review. Who did you book your Secret Passages Tour of the Palazzo Vecchio with? Did you also rent an audioguide and what did you think of it? I love to learn but I often find audio guides distract me from the experience. Many thanks!

Hi Bookwoman,
You can book the tour in Plazzo Vecchio, while arriving, or also on the website of Palazzo. Google is your friend :)
Much luck, enjoy your stay

Just booked it - Book direct. There are lots of tour companies offering the tour but charging an awful lot more. Just paid 14 euros which includes the Secret Passages tour and museum entry. The tower is additional for a further 4 euros.
