About
The Misericordia was born when the Dominican Pietro da Verona, arrived in Florence to fight the heretic patari. Citizens ‘companies were formed – the Companies of the Faith – which in a few months were the opponents’ right. At that point, laid down the sword, those same men cradled the rosary to devote themselves to works of mercy. And so, almost 8 centuries ago, an Institution was set up that put itself concretely at the service of the neighbor and became an example of boundless charity, inspiring the birth of numerous sisters: today there are 700 Misericordia in Italy in the world. The role played by the Florentine association, as shown by numerous archival documents, became more and more a social service. So that its history went to intertwine, firmly, with that of the city that was its cradle. Several times the Medici, the Lorraine, but also the now united Italy, turned to the Misericordia to solve problems of a collective nature.

Neighbourhood: Duomo
Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

We stumbled upon this museum when trying to find things to do on our Florence pass before leaving Florence. The guides were very kind, and the one who accompanied us was very patient (he was nominated by another as he spoke the most English, not a lot, but our Italian is limited to about two words) explaining the artwork, artifacts and mission. It provided a down to earth look at an organization providing humanitarian assistance through the ages and apparently the work continues.

It is easy to miss this delightful museum that sits smack dab on the Duomo Square as it is often blocked by several ambulances. The museum itself documents the Misericordia founded in 1244 to give aid during the plague and cholera epidemics. It would transform over time into today's ambulance corps among other things. A fascinating and colorful history presented in a very near way. Try not to miss it. It is usually overlooked and not packed with tourists.

If you are interested in the history of Florence or the history of medicine and health care,
this small museum is well worth a visit. The Misericordia was founded to help people after one of Florences early Black Plague epidemics. To see how this organization struggled to care for ill people and the progression from palliative care to modern medicine is fascinating.

My partner and I stumbled across this museum on a recent trip to Florence and were so grateful that we did! The experience was brilliant, and it is such an interesting collection of history. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole visit and it was a rare occasion where I felt I actually learned a completely new piece of history that I wasn’t aware of previously. Our tour guide was fantastic, very informative and passionate. Thanks you all so much - a brilliant hidden gem!

This was not one of the well known spots and we came across it on a wet morning. It is to do with the health and nursing history in Florence and worth a visit.

I went in there with my husband during our holiday in Florence and we really enjoyed our time.
This place is really close to duomo and palazzo vecchio, exactly in the main street that link them. There are about 14 rooms and (as everywhere in Florence) a lot of artistic and amazing things.
The museum's staff is really professional and kind and at the end of your visit you can write something about your experience on a special notebook.
A little jewel in the center of Florence!

We accidentally wandered here, thinking that we were going to another museum (Our Italian isn't that great!) and are happy that we did. We got a wonderful history lesson on the charitable work that has taken place in Florence (anonymously) for centuries during plagues, wars and other disasters. The museum had recently been renovated and we seemed to be the only visitors, but if you're interested in learning more about this beautiful city, give yourself an hour or so and enjoy the beautifully displayed artifacts of this association. It'll give you a different perspective of the way some people of means and education actually respected and cared for the poor. Another perk on a hot summer day is the air conditioning!
