The area

Neighbourhood: Duomo
Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Arco di San Pierino is actually an arch, possibly a 12th century triumphal arch, like the ones Roman emperors and famous generals used to build all over the place in order to celebrate one of their victories in battle, similar to the ones in Rome or the one in Paris. Most probably it formed part of ancient or medieval walls which went around the then city of Florence. Today all you see is the outline of the arch, depending where you stand, but also there is an actual arched gateway remaining. The Arco is now full of cafes, restaurants and other shops, outside as well as inside the Arch. It's worth visiting, if you happen to be in the area.

What today appears as a vaulted passage was originally a city gate that opened into the 12th century walls. Currently the passage connects Via dell'Oriuolo (at the intersection of this with Borgo Pinti and Via Sant'Egidio) with Piazza di San Pier Maggiore and as a former defensive function in the Middle Ages (of which evidence remains in the trapdoors still present in the vault ) has now become a place of conviviality, given the premises that are found here, as well as maintaining its historical function as a passage.
