Statua di Giovanni dalle Bande Nere is an unusual statue. It represents a Medici Family member. The Medicis were fabulously wealthy and powerful for a very long time. The strange thing is that the man is shown seated, rather than standing. The reason is that it was intended to be placed elsewhere. It is in the Piazza San Lorenzo, opposite the Basilica di San Lorenzo.

This is a statue of one of the Medici family. It’s a nicely done statue. I saw it walking by and wouldn’t go out of my way to see it, but it’s nice.

Sitting on the northeast corner of Piazza San Leonardo atop a large marble pedestal with four symbolic Doric columns supporting a cornice upon which the plinth and statue rest is the statue of Lodovico di’Medici. He was a mercenary soldier in the employ of many Popes. The pedestal is decorated with a relief of a battle scene on the front side and an epigraph and small fountain on the back. The sides are emblazoned with the Medici emblem. His son was Cosimo I.

This monument built during the 16th century and dedicated to the greatest leader who belonged to the Medici family, is located in the square in front of the basilica of San Lorenzo, even if at the time of its construction the intentions were to place it inside the basilica itself. The monument presents several particularities, first of all John of the Black Bands is depicted sitting and not standing as was usually appropriate for a leader and furthermore the statue appears small and disproportionate compared to the enormous cubic base and decorated with reliefs, coats of arms and registrations. Transformed into a fountain in the following centuries, I personally would not include it among the most beautiful monuments in Florence.

The character sitting on a pedestal in Piazza San Lorenzo could be taken to be some kind of ancient Roman figure of mature age. However, this will be wrong. Giovanni "Black Stripes" was a condottiere in the first third of the 16th century and died of gangrene at the age of 28. If not for his nickname, we would call him a military commander, but “bande” in Italian is consonant with “banda” - gang. And the connection here is closer than in Conan Doyle’s famous story “The Speckled Band” with a similar English word. Having committed his first murder at the age of 12 and a rape at 13, Giovanni formed his “black gang” with the corresponding stripes on the flag and earned money in the service of his second cousins sitting on the Holy See, Leo X and Clement VII. Also from the Medici family. Specializing in ambushes and firefights. However, in battles with a regular army armed with artillery, the skills of the mercenary leader were useless, as was confirmed in his Battle of Governolo in 1526, in which a cannonball hit him in the leg, causing gangrene. The statue was sculpted by the sculptor Baccio Bandinelli, author of “Hercules and Cacus”, which is located in the Piazza Signoria near David. This was an order from the son of Giovanni Cosimo I de' Medici, Duke of Florence. Not only was the order completed 20 years before 1560, but the statue and pedestal were reunited only 3 centuries later in 1850.

The Statue of Giovanni (de' Medici) dalle Bande Nere is located in Piazza San Lorenzo near the Basilica and was commissioned by Cosimo I; beautiful monument, once also used as a fountain for watering horses, formed by a rectangular-shaped base on whose larger sides there are the description and dedication of the Work and a bas-relief, while on the smaller sides there are various carved decorations; above the base is the statue of John of the Black Bands.
