It was worth climbing up for the views. There was lots of photography art displayed which was a nice addition to the fort itself. Although we did not eat at the cafe, it was nice to know that we could grab a bite to eat...More

The fortress was built in the 16th century by the grand duke of Tuscany, Cosimo Medici, at the ruins of the old Etruscan, Roman and medieval fortifications. It is in a very good shape, recently restored, but the main reason for visiting is the beautiful...More

We parked at the bottom of Cortona and started our walk to the top for the Fortress, it was a steep climb with many stairs but the reward of the views and feeling above everyone else is worth it, sadly a thunderstorm and torrential rain...More

High atop the hill of Cortona stands the Medici's fort. We walked up from the town, passed Chiesa Santa Margherita and found the Fortezza del Girifalco. Even though there is parking, it was well worth the walk up.

Worth visiting to get the amazing views from the fortress. Take some photos looking out toward the lake. Little cafe up top does spritz, wine or cafe.

OK so there are not so much to look at inside the fortress but just looking at the building and imagining how it was used was enough for me. I was also lucky since there were two exhibitions at the time. You will also get...More

Travelling from Roma to Venezia we wanted to stop and enjoy something new in Tuscany. On previous trips we've been to Firenze, Lucca, Pisa, Sienna - and, wanted to avoid the crowds but still enjoy a worthwhile experience. Cortona was it. We spent the better...More

Cortona was not as interesting as other hill towns, for us. but we had decided to view the Fortress. The climb up is never ending, meet many people coming down giving you words of encouragement; and then it goes up again. When you arrive at...More

Great menu with local wines (AND local beer!), and incredible service from the staff. We climbed from the amphitheater down at the "bottom" of the hill town of Cortona, and were in need of a good rest. The fortress has rotating art exhibits, and spectacular...More
