- PeteFredericksburg, Virginia1,200 contributionsA thought about Castles….I didn’t get a chance to tour the inside of the castle, but I felt compelled to make one comment that may be interesting. There are many different designs for castles and they usually fall somewhere on a continuum of palace on one end and military defense on the other end. From a military standpoint, I especially like this design. Inevitably, while a military siege is taking place, on the castle, the defenders will have to leave the castle to resupply itself. Leaving the castle underwater, probably like this case, seems to me to be the most clandestine method of doing so.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 2 November 2023
- 301lisa33Coventry, United Kingdom2,014 contributionsDramatic siteThis castle charges an entry fee. It is located at the very tip of Ortigia island - a dramatic site. In style it is quite plain and massive. Dramatic views across the bay can be had in places and you can walk around sections of the walls. However views from the very tip of the island are only available to taller folk: the walls obscure the view for us shorter people.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 May 2024
- cc972014Brussels, Belgium84 contributionsBeautiful but lack of explanations given (in English)Beautiful but why does it seem so hard in Sicily to add some explanations when visiting castles and ancient monuments. Only few explanations are given and merely in Italian very often. Seems like Italy is not expecting tourism from abroad. I find this very irritating. Otherwise beautiful castle with a great historyVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 June 2024
- Laura P4 contributionsCastle on the oceanThe castle is situated right on the ocean on island of Ortigia, Sicily . Built in 1242 it’s in very good shape and easy to walk through . The inside roof and castle is impressive . Well worth the 5euros.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 12 September 2024

Check the opening times before you go, closes Sunday afternoon and then not open until Tuesday. 6 euro entry, well worth it. Interesting archeology and history. Lovely views. Quite uneven for walking in places so were sensible footwear, especially for walking over reflective glass floor artwork in main gallery. It's a bit disconcerting as it makes cracking noises as you walk. Good visit very nice cafe near entrance

A wonderfully constructed fort. Some size and impressive architecture. Agree there could be more information put on notice boards. Most in formation was in Italian with little English translations. We were lucky to see the art installation as well. Stunning with the backdrop of the castle. .

A lovely castle to look at, however the 8 euro entry fee was not justified as there was little to no information about the castle’s history and the castle itself was empty apart from an art exhibition. It would have been brilliant to learn about the history of different aspects of the castle through information boards. Would not recommend for the price as did not learn anything new.

We missed it.
We walked all the way thru Ortigia, from the Apollo Temple, through Piazza Archimedes and the Fountain of Diana, The Piazza Duomo and Ortigia Cathedral, The Giardino Aretusa, Largo Aretusa and its fountain, till the very end of this almost island to finally reach the Castle.
But we did not get in.
What a Fomo.
The sea view was awesome, the weather perfect so we lingered outisde, which was nice and even more than that. But we should have got in.
Maybe next time

It was a stunning castle and not crowded at all. We went in the mid afternoon on a Saturday. It was great for accessibility in majority of the castle (wheelchair, strollers, etc.). Very picturesque with a beautiful ocean view. Probably don't need more than an hour stay there if that. I would recommend as one of the must sees there but I wouldn't go out of your way for it if you don't need to.

Too expensive for what it offers (9€)! I thought i would have information about the city and the castle but It is not provided any historical information, not even a map....! Its like walk in the middle of ruins....The structure of the fortress its nice but we can enjoying also outside saving money. I felt i was being robbed. Do not recommend the visit

This large castle is located at the end of the peninsula. It was built by Frederick II. in 1239. The massive Swabian fortress was recently renovated. We walked there from the Fonte Aretusa. Unfortunatelly, it was closed so we could only see it from outside, but it’s worth a visit.

Di norma il Catello Maniace è visitabile anche il sabato, ma attualmente credo sia chiuso a causa del Covid 19.

Can you tour inside or do you just see that castle from a distance? If you can tour what are the hours for Monday?
Gratzie
